Gerry - nice bit of work DAT!
Could I suggest just a little more bass drum? It ought to be more obvious than it is as the scooped ricky bass isn't hogging the bottom ed too much.
It's really good to hear your tunes with real drums.
Well done PI too!

Hey ido, great performance and I too love to hear your tunes with a drummer on them. It really adds another level of interest missing prior.

As for the mix here, I dunno...the whole mix sounds kind of oddly scooped to me...a little subdued if you will. I was wishing it had more brightness and more punch. The clarity is there, but I long for more bite or something...again, nice song and performance :).

sounded good on my phones (why do i get relegated to these at the weekend :( )

but I did pump the volume a bit...maybe the drums could come up in the mix

good performance and a well written song to boot...good job :)

I listened on my cheap mini-headphones, so any comments may be suspect :)

I like the song and the recording sounds pretty good. I would have liked a little more "punch" on the snare - maybe a bit more high-end and some compression. But I *really* wanted to hear someone cut loose during the performance - maybe a lead instrument of some kind to add some color. I guess the guitars can't do it since they are doubling each other - but the bass could take a few more chances with high scalar runs, and some slaps. Or (even better) a horn section to supply some interesting counterpoint. Good job!

Thanks Ray, heatmiser, kcearl, jmasek

Yes = I will try and push the bass on the drums. It should respond ;).
I've been leaving Mike's bass intact except for some highs where there appears to be some noise. Any suggestions for a noise gate? Calkwalk seems to be short on that.

I've heard that a few times.... For anyone who needs some real drums, I believe Jason (poeticintensity) is available for the job. He has my recommendation....

Sounds great!
The vocal reminds me of old Steve Winwood.
I agree that the kick drum needs to come up just a tad. (more lows?)
Very few tracks, but sounds very full.
Good job.

Sounds great with real drums, Gerry. Very well played and mixed. Loved the guitar solo. Only thing that I miss is a bit of bite in the rythm guitars, not necessarily a heavy tone, but a kind of dirtier valve sound. Still a great song though!

Joey :):):):)

I like your stuff better with real drums. These drums are okay, but they're a little dark and lifeless. The snare could use more snap and the kick is MIA. The playing is great, but the sound of the kit overall could be better.

Hi, Gerry!

Vocals and guitars great tone . I like the drums too , real drums definitelly improved your recordings - snare could be less "fat". Bass guitar sounds too loud in the mix.

Congrats , excelent job as usual:)

The tune sounds great, Gerry! Good mixin'. Man, I must be gettin' picky because now I'm hearing quite a few spots where I was slightly off-timing. Grrr...

Anyway... I don't want to hi-jack the thread, but since Gerry already mentioned it, if anyone wants acoustic drums added to one of their tunes, Gerry is right. I'd love to help out. I built a website for my services, too. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Greg... I totally agree about the snare. Right now, I'm just using an SM57 about 2" up and 2" in from the edge, angled in so it's pointing just off-center.

I can't get the sound to really "crack" like yours does. I've got a brand-new ambassador suede head, too, tightened pretty tightly (but not super tight). I'd love any suggestions on how to make my snare pop, without adding EQ (if it's possible)...

Slowly, yet surely... Baby steps... :)

Thanks Clark - I've heard that a few times wrt this tune...

Drums make a difference for sure... I can add a little more pre gain - this is a clean channel tune but you'd be surprised how gritty I can get it on my Marshall..

Thanks Greg - PI (Jason) asks about this below, so I'll let you guys discuss this aspect.

Bass is always a challenge for me - so I appreciate the feedback. I'll take it down a notch.

We can work on that....

That seems like a good mic and position. Try pointing it closer to the rim to get more shell and snare buzz and less top-head. The batter head does very little for the snares overall sound. Too much top head will make a snare sound dull and donky. I point mine right at the rim, about 2 inches up, and 2 inches back. I get a pretty snappy snare sound.

Bottom line though, the snare has to sound in real life like you want it to sound recorded. My snare gives a pretty ear-splitting crack in real life, so getting that sound recorded isn't too hard. I use pretty dead batter heads. I like the Evans Power Center Reverse Dot, Evans Genera Dry, and Remo Powerstroke 3 snare batter heads. The Evans heads get used on my brass snare, and the Remo on my maple snare. All work very well for a defined snare whack. I also use Remo Ambassador Hazy reso heads and Pure-Sound snare wires. I tune my batter head tighter than the reso head on the snare. That's all personal taste though.

Dude, your stuff just COMES TO LIFE with real drums. You gotta stop tracking with that old beast of a drum machine you use... This is sweet!

Definitely an improvement. I still think the drums could be snappier, but they are better than before. I think the guitars sound great. Nice spread and seperation in the rhythms.

Thanks Greg =) Jason did a few changes to the drums and it tightened up the song a bit - I think mainly in the solo from what I can hear. I did a vocal comp to smooth out a few rough spots too. Glad you like it!

Your songs do make a quantum leap when real drums are added. Given that the programmed drum versions were terrific the upgrade make them superb.
the song itself is terrific, the vocals are excellent, the guitars are superb and Mike's bass is ace. Now with added pounding skins & things the brew is mature and ready to sip.

New mix ready to go based on the comments received....
Did some vocal edits, took the bass down a notch and Jason (poeticintensity) sent me a new drum mix which I inserted.

Have a listen and let me know how it sounds now.....
