Make a back up copy of my 4 track master

Hi !

I have the TASCAM 414 mk2 ... I wish to make a back up copy of my master 4 - track onto another multi-track recorder. How do I do this ?

Well......... before we even talk about the HOW, we need to talk about the WHY.

Since this is not a digital machine but rather a bare-bones analog machine, your "backups" are going to be 2nd generation copies of your original tracks and the sound quality will be degraded significantly - so much so that you won't really have a useful "backup" (ie, if you lose your main work tapes, pop your copy into the machine and it will sound much more muddy and noisy.)

The only practical way to minmize the signal loss (although you will still get a little) is to send your 4-tracks to a digital format (computer, ADAT, even MiniDisc). But, if you had any of those formats, you probably wouldn't be using the 414! (and if you still were I'd ask WHY!) :)

So given that........ are you still sure you need to know the HOW???

you might want to try using a Hi-fi VCR and hi-fi VHS tape.if you have one. there are instructions on this website about it as a "poor mans DAT" and it works better than leaveing your master copy on cassette.
 
Terrace, as I understood him - he wanted to make copies of his 4-track tapes, so a VCR will not help in that situation (since he'd need another 4-track medium to copy to)...

I do mixdown to a Hi Fi VCR but I was talking about making another 4 track copy of my original 4 track master. Thanks.

I see you're right, and here I was thinking I was so smrt. sorry for the misadvice. I don't know what I thought I was reading. Just too eager to help I guess.
