Peavey ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got my new C1's the other day and I noticed something very wrong right away.

The foam in the cute case that comes with it smells

Horrid!

Thus the mic, and especially the windscreen, are distractingly smelly. I rescued the mics (which were fortunately wrapped in plactic) from their foul beds and let them air out. They have recovered nicely.

The cases, however, resisted my usual treatment of being stuck in a box with Nagchampa incense. I'm afraid I've had no choice but to banish them to my cedar chest until the chose to give up their foul ways.

:D

Other then that, the mic is fascinating. It will take me a while to figure out how to use it well since I'm so used to my GT 5sm, but I like the sound of it so far. Fuller then the GT, but harder for me to fit into the mix. I'll figure it out eventually.

There was a small amount of ordor with mine. Check and see if it might be the wind screen...I suspect that's where that faint, but unique smell of the far is coming from.

Can you unscrew the windscreen, or remove it....? If possible... Just take it off and spray it down with Binaca.. (the peppermint mouthspray)

When my old band used to do gigs, we would do that now and then, cause we were always passing mics back and forth and everyones beer-breath just layered on the mic....:)

No problems when I got mine some months back. However, I do remember seeing a thread sometime ago about a similar problem with foam packaging from China.

Why not rip the foam out of the case and replace it with some of that grey rubber foam.

Describe the smell...

Are we talking rotten Eggs?..... Rotten Meat?........ Newborn Baby Poo?......Rush Limaugh?

How does the smell compare to a U87 ?

It smells exactly like a U87! That's what is so uncanny! It smells exactly like a vintage german mic! :D

Seriously, though. Ja, its probably just the windscreen, now that I think about it. I'll stick it out under some moss for a few weeks. :D

Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying my new mics. :D

Vox: Well, this smell kinda defies being placed in any particular genre, but if I had to guess I would place it as cross between industrial chemicals and skunk cabbage, with just a hint of cayenne on the side. It'r really quite unique and exciting! I'm sure that I'll get used to it with repeated exposure and soon everyone will want windscreens that smell like this.

Off to work!

Just got another C-1 a few days ago and the foam smells like, well, foam.....a kind of petrochemical odor, especially the windscreen.

I havn't had any trouble with mics smelling, but I bought a desk for my studio the other day that gives me a headache everytime I walk in. It works so well though, it's worth the pain!

Chris,

Well, we never got that complaint before. Perhaps some moisture got in and cause it to happen. I would be happy to replace the cases if you cant get the smell out. Actually, I am glad the complaint was on the case. We have not had any complaint of the sound of the mics yet, so I thought you might be the first... :D

Anyway, just let me know what you want to do. We stand behind our products 110%, and that will include the case, mount and foam filter. Keep me posted.

Gidge,

I got somethin you can smell...;) ;) :p :D

No problems, Alan. :D I'm more than happy with my mics. In my other life I work in the clean outdoors so I just have an overly sensative sniffer. Chemical smells- like a new foam windscreen packed in porous foam and sealed in plastic for some length of time- make me sit up and take notice. I highly doubt anyone else would really have a problem with it...

Nor do I, for that matter. Unless they can make ORGANIC windscreens?! Organic, free range, hormone free windscreens! Yeah!

As for the sound- well, I'll have to wait until I have more experience with it, but so far they sound very full and flattering. I'm going to have to play with how to use and mix it because it sounds so different from my other LD condensors. No complaints, though- just inexperience.

I also think it made a good broadcast mic for the offical home rec voice chat going on last weekend. :D

Take care,
Chris

official home rec voice chat?? hmm, whens the next one?

Here's the thread:

It's pretty much ongoing, but will likely be more lively during the weekends and evenings. The software works amazingly well, though there are a number of pop-up ads because its free.

Sunday night we had a bit of "jamming" going on. :D Its just as easy to play a guitar or a tune through it as it is to talk, though its kinda lo-fi. Except Ed's music came through fairly clearly.(shrug) Big surpirse, eh?
