I have been reading good reviews about the Magnepan MMG planar/ribbon speakers for home theater. I wonder how they would do for mastering. (I have a dream of someday building my own dedicated mastering room.)

The reason I ask is because the reviews say things like the soundfield is more clear and obvious than box speakers, there is less vertical dispersion, they have less distortion, and transient response is faster.

Never liked 'em for critical listening. No idea if I'm in a minority on that... That said, I don't know of any mastering facilities that use them (planars in general). If there was an advantage, I'd imagine they'd be all over the place.

definately not for mastering... personnally i never liked the maggies... if ya want planar look into real electrostatics... martin logans for instance... or acoustat... the diff is astounding... oh.. and placement is critical for speakers of this type...

Thor @ Sonova Mastering uses them although he incorporates subs as well.

I think their best model goes down to 35Hz +/-

I did ask him about how they worked out once because I remembered checking them out a looooong time ago. He said that he enjoys working with them.

Thank you everyone for the help.

This report was the reason I asked about them. Giant Speaker Shootout The results for the under $1000 category was what impressed me the most. I know this was aimed at home theater speakers but I reasoned that their clarity might do well in a mastering room.

However, I later found an old post by Barefoot which really opened my eyes to this topic. https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=67648 Scroll down to post #12 where Barefoot chimes in about issues when using planars for monitoring.

Maybe I'll stick to listening to speakers before I choose.

Bingo.

Selecting loudspeakers - or any other widget in our arsenal - based upon their design category is close to meaningless. Might as well select your wedding limo based upon it's engine design.
