Yeah I've read a lot of good things about the Mackies. But right now I need cheaper monitors $1600 is just too steep at this time.

I almost think that the Yamahas would be like a trial by fire.
Or training wheels, depending on how you look at it.

God, I am so torn!

You can get the Mackies for about $1200 now if you look hard enough, and they sound GREAT.

its about $400 or so.
Sorry about the extra post, this was supposed to be part of the Tannoy vs Yamaha vs Event post. I F8cked up and made a new thread accidently.

did you need active or passive?.....

if active, JBL LSR25P's are under $500/pr ...very nice monitor but i couldnt afford them.....

I settled on a pair of Tannoy ProtoJ's with a small amp.....

Probably passives, for now thats what I can afford. I have an Ra-100 amp, but I hear its crap from some of the users on this forum.

you cant always go by what is said here...the RA-100 is far from PRO quality, but we are at HOMErecording.com......

what are you monitoring with now?

ProtoJ's are ~ $175 and will do fine....

Alesis Monitor Ones. Which I have had for almost three years. I would track and mix on them. As the story usually goes mixes would sound great on them but quiet and kind of flacid everywhere else. So when I blew the woofer on one I decided it was time to try something else. So I borrowed a friends Tannoy Reveals and mixed like 5 songs on them over the course of like 4 days and BAM, I finally got results that sounded much cleaner and less confusing for lack of a better way to describe it. I barely used any EQ, which I always felt like I needed to on the Alesis.

So what I am thinking is, the Reveals are good, I have been really happy w/ them so far. But the Yamahas from what I hear are really honest and deatailed. I feel like I should get something that really forces me to learn how to mix and then once I have developed my skills upgrade or at least suppliment w/ anothe pair of monitors.

My fear is that the Tannoys might not be brutal enough to force me into good mixing habits.
