RE mackie XDR pres
I faced this exact same question 2 mos ago. I hated the preamps on
my fostex fd-8 DAW and so I decided to get a small a outboard mixer. With the intent to save a few bucks, I bought
a behringer mx802a, was VERY dissapointed with the pres and looked into some rack preamp units. Of all the ones I looked at...ie ART, Joe Meek, dBs...etc, for every good review came a poor one following...very subjective to say the least. So....again to save a little coin, I bought a used
mackie cr1604....definately an improvement over what I had been using.....but still not as good as I had hoped. Finally, after a lot of headaches and frustration, I spent the few extra bucks and bought the 1202 vlz-pro...not the micro series but the true VLZ-PRO. THis unit has been nothing but one of the single best pieces of equipment I have purchased in the past 5 yrs...the preamps rock for everything; the unit is super quiet, and I dont believe there is a single engineer on the planet who would put down the quality of this unit, especially for the money. YOu know the saying man...you can have the best guitar in the world, but with a garbage amp...you will never appreciate what the guitar is worth. Well...the same goes for vocal mics, your voice and the preamp you run the thing through. Do yourself a favor man, get the mackie...you wont be sorry. If you'd like to hear my latest single fully recorded on
the 1202 vlz-pro, go to

Good Luck to ya,
Blake
