what are the differences between the vlz and the vlz pro?
I know that the vlz is the older series but what is the technical difference
between this two?

thank you

My recommedation is to not even worry about the difference between the two...stay away from both of them. I bought a new VLZ Pro when I was a greenhorn and after the honeymoon period was over I then became very unhappy with the unit. Yes, it is built like a tank....but...it's sonic qualities are poor. Once I opened the thing up I figured out why, basicially its poorly designed with tons of el cheapo caps and cheapo op amps. They kill the dynamics. After 4 years I sold it off and picked up the cheapest Behringer mixer which sounds much better. I will not vouch for other Behringer mixers though. My logic was that Behringer are cheapskates. They will put the minimum stuff they can. Its a little $35 desktop mixer that works just fine for what I need it to do. The VLZ series has a worthless EQ and theres so much junk inside, it KILLS THE DYNAMICS OF YOUR SOUND. If you were to listen to the two A/B style, you could easily hear what I'm talking about. I've been a happier camper now that I can hear my tracks properly. There are just too many funky distortions going on with the VLZ series to make them what they call "Recording Ready". If they have to spell it out that its "Recording Ready", run for the hills. If Greg Mackie designed this, then he sucks.

If I were going to look at picking up another smaller mixer, I would look at the Folio series. I'm thinkin but don't know for sure that it could be a winner at 200 bucks. They "say" they use quality parts.

My two hey pennies.

So I have a similar quest. Bob, I have an MSR-16 on the way...what would you recommend for a board if I am only to record max 4 channels at a time but need to mix the full sixteen? Used for $$savings, preferably.
VLZ, VLZ Pro, or other? $300 is what I can afford, but need something temp until I can afford more.

Seeker Dude,

I really wouldn't know what to recommend. You'll have to spend some hours poking around the net to figure out whats available that fits your requirements and how others feel about it. Then place a resident search on ebay. You can set up and save a search routine in your "my ebay" that will automactically email you when the item you are seeking becomes listed. Kinda neat. High demand items can sell for 75% and more of the new price. Sometimes you can get lucky if you persist. I've heard of good deals from Musicians Fiend closeout/scratch and dent section.

Look for an old used Allen heath, Yamaha, Soundtracs, or a Soundcraft 200 or 400b. You may be able to find a Soundcraft 200b for about $300 that will do 16 channels and in my opinion sound better than the new Soundcrafts, Macke's etc...

I know how to get what I want. Just need some advice on what I need first...baby steps, ya know :D
Once I know what I need to interface with the MSR, I have full confidence I can acquire it accordingly....I don't want to hijack, but can anyone answer my question while I raise it?? Please see above... :) :)
