I just picked up a good used Roland VS-880. I also own a Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro and want to take advantage of the Mackie mic preamps. Given that the VS-880 has it's own mic pres, is it reasonable to run through the 1604 and into an input on the VS-880? Or does this approach mess with the signal path? Any feedback will be appreciated? Thanks....Keith.

Yo Keith:

I don't own a Roland box but I'm pretty sure your idea will work.

Like, I have mic pres on my Yam 2816; however, I don't engage them as I run stuff through a Grace 101 direct.

I'm now waiting for an RNC and I plan to run from the Grace to the RNC and then into my 2816.

I'm sure you can make the patch. Just don't use the pres on the Roland and see what it sounds like.

How to not engage the pres...

Thanks for your response Green Hornet! When you suggest to not engage the pres in the VS-880, I'm not sure how to accomplish that. I assume by keeping the trim on the 880 channel strip all the way down? I recieved a similar response in another area on this site but I'm not sure if keeping the trim at minimum is what would "disengage" the 880's pre. If that is the method than I assume I would:

1. Get an optimal input signal on the Mackie mixer channel
2. Use the Mackie's output level to obtain an optimal input signal for the 880 channel, leaving the 880's trim all the way down

Does that make sense? Thanks again for your advice?

Hey KTasker! Your best bet to find answers on just about anything dealing with these rolands is to check out...

this is a great resource. I'd suggest posting something in the "VS-880" section or the "recording booth" section.

I've got a VS-880EX myself and love it. have fun.
