Whats GOOD MATCH FOR THE MACKIE HR824,S

what i want to know is that i already have the makies they are powered so im after passive monitors now so what would work well with the mackies is there anything that stands out as a good match to use along side these speakers

also aurotone speakers can someone give me a little run down on these speakers as well thanks in advance

kind regards Wayne

I've had a pair of Auratones now for about 20 years, and like them pretty much. I only listen thru them at a pretty low level, and when my ears are *tired*. Otherwise, I much prefer my JBL4311's. They aren't very full range, but give an accurate picture of levels and stuff, and lets you hear if the bass notes are coming thru or not....not the bass levels though...big difference. After owning them for this long, I would still say it would be about as hard to mix on them as headphones. I also like listening to the vocal mixes on them too. At less than $100, I'd highly recommend picking up a pair. I believe they first originally came out to simulate playback fidelity on cheaper systems, TV's, and stuff like that.

As far as a second *main* speaker to match with the Mackies, would you consider a larger speaker? I like the Mackies, but being limited to "nearfield" monitors would bother me and just getting another pair of "something" to compare, in the same size arena, seems like a waste. Otherwise....find the ubiquitous NS10's, I guess (I say lacking any real recommendation).

i bought the mackies as a nearfield but iam told their more midfield so what it is im trying to do is get a pair of passive monitors that will go for nearfield that will also be a good match for the mackies they will cover as near field then look for something for far fields and themn maybe use the auratones to listen to the final work hope this explanes a little better please correct me if my assisment is wrong with what im trying to achieve thanks all :-)

I don't own the Mackies, but I have used them on *limited* occasions at friend's studios. I would consider them nearfield, for sure, and would not want them more than about 2 meters away from me on either side, at the most. I think currently the price of mid-field/far-field speakers....like soffit mountable stuff, would begin to get a tad expensive, now a days. The new JBL stuff in the $2000/pair would qualify, for me, and would be the direction I would go in. ....model number escapes me now, but the ones in that price range are the only JBL's currently availble at the approx. price. ...12 inch woofers, etc. Maybe some older used JBL's [if you can find them], or even some dinosaur UREI 813's....something like that. Bigger woofers to get some AIR moving!!

HR624's

Just to tag on to the end of this thread,
has anyone heard anything about the HR624's???

I read the press release on the mackie website. It seems that the hr624's are a little brother to the HR824's. Now, judging that my current speaker (Spirit absolute zero's) have a 6 inch woofer (As far as I know) then, i'd be quite happy to trade up to the HR624's as they too have a 6" woofer.

Has anyone tried these yet? The sales date for them is January 2002, but I thought maybe Mackie may have given some of the bigger studio's sample speakers.

Thanks again guys,

Rochey

nearfield / midfield

I would definately call the Mackies nearfield. Just because they can pump out enough SPL to make you cringe in the nearfield doesn't mean they are midfield :)

But seriously, when I first got my mackies I was only able to setup a "listening triangle" that was 1 meter on each side. They were just fine in this position. Now that I've made more space, I have about a 1.8m triangle -- they sound better like this, with better stereo seperation, but I wouldn't really want to have them much further from me that that. The whole point of nearfield monitors is to create a "sweet spot" where most of what you are hearing is rfom the speakers, not from room and furniture reflections.

If I were to supplement my Mackies someday, I would take a close look at the Event 20/20bas, Tannoy active Reveals, the JBL competition, and maybe even higher-end items. If there is anything I could call the Mackie HR824's lacking in it would be crisp defenition under 70Hz.
