I'd like to get my 15 year old son a PA system. They play heavy-rock (POD,Slipknot, etc.....). I'd like to buy a Mackie 808M head, but I'd like some advice on what speakers are compatible and will be able to take a miked kick drum. At this time I can only afford two speaker cabinets. The 808M puts out 300w per channel at 8 ohms.

Thanks,
Mugsy

I'm not going to answer your question about speakers, because I'm not sure regarding your specific question about the kick drum, but I would encourage you to spend the exta $100 or so and get the 808S (stereo, but more importantly, includes EFFECTS: reverb, chorus, etc.).

I have the 808S and am VERY happy with it. I have not used it to mic drums, but I run it into 2 Yamaha SM 15IV's ($299 each street price) and have found it very satisfactory as a general practice room PA setup.

Legume, Thanks for your response. My first choice was Yamaha's S15E's, but I was told that they couldn't handle the output of the Mackie 808M. The S15E's are rated 250/500 W peak, which I thought would be perfect for the 300 W rating of the 808M. The S115IV's are rated a little higher, 400/500 W peak. Maybe that was the problem.
Let me clarify my comment about the kick drum. I was also told, that speakers such as JBL TR125's would distort if you tried to run a miked kick drum through them. Thanks again!
