I'm fed up triyng to record shit with 4-tracks to input. for example band rehealsals, small gigs etc. So, I decided to get a small mixer to have more tracks/mics at the spot, mix those there and record that to 4 tracks.

While at it I thought I'd by something that might be use afterwoods too, so is that a useful piece? any experienses? word on the street?

use to own one for years. loved it but sold it to get a digital mixer. pre-amps are good. my band uses one for live sound.

So, you are saying it could be used as a mixer on a small gig too?`.. That'd be great...
Think I'm going to order one this second. Thanks!..

the new version of the vlz series is just out incidentally...

I used to have a few 1604 VLZ PRO's actually. It's a good little mixer--good enough to mix smaller projects on, but also well set up for use on live gigs.

I have a 1604. One of the best musical investments I ever made. It's been perfect.

Great, useful piece of gear. They are built like tanks and can take a lot of abuse. The 1604 has the VLZ preamps, which are very nice for live sound and are good for the price range for recording, although not up to boutique standards. It also excels when it comes to connectivity issues: versatile design. I prefer Mackie over Behringer or Alesis. Also take a look at the Yamaha MG series which is similar, although perhaps not as solid. See if there's a Soundcraft in your size / price range as well. Some like the preamps better.

Maybe this link to the owner's manual will help. Look at the hookup diagrams beginning on page 6. http://www.mackie.com/pdf/1604vlzpro_om.pdf

I had an original CR 1604 back in the day--That was great. From what I understand the Vlz Pro is even better.I did just buy a 1402 and it is just great ...

It's not bad at all for the price. Used quite a few, never thought they were all that great sounding but they certainly get the job done. And they sound better than a lot of what's out there. I'd buy a used one off of ebay though. Not worth it new unless the warranty is important to you.
