Is the mackie 1402 a good unit for making drum sub mixes into an AW4416
If so is it as simple as miking the drums through the mackie then running the sterio outs into inputs on the AW4416 ?
any info would help,
and do I need any Mic preamps with the Mackie?
Thank you all for your help.

Dude, in a word......YES.

If all you need is 6 pres and a couple of lines, this unit is wonderful, IMO. The pres in that mixer are better than some will admit and much better than most pres in the sub 500 dollar a piece pres out there. You will get much mileage out of this mixer for the dough....get one used if you can.

For the record, I have a much bigger Mackie and still use the 1402 for quick, no fuss pres.

I have 2 Mackie 1202's which give me 8 mic pre's. But what I do is mic my drums, usually with 6 mics.
Kick
Snare
Rack Toms
Floor Tom
2 Overheads
I run each mic to a separate xlr pre on the Mackies, then out the Mackie INSERTS. The 1402 has 6 of these. By using the inserts, with the 1/4" jack all the way in, you bypass the main outs and the eq's, but you get 6 discrete channels and the use of the pre's.
If you have 6 or more ins on your recorder, this is a good way to go.

If you only have 4 ins on the recorder, still run your mics to the xlr pre's, but send one stereo mix to the main out and another via the Mackie alt 3/4 by muting those channels. The manual is very clear on how this works. If you don't have one, the Mackie web site has a .pdf.
