What's a better mixer for recording bands and for doing live shows? I originally wanted the 1604 just because it has 16 channels, but the problem is they're all 1/4" inputs. The 1402 has 6 1/4" inputs and 6 XLR inputs. Will that be enough?

Oh that's cool. I was at SweetWater.com and they said that the 1604 had Analog Inputs 16/16 and the 1402 had 6/14, but above that it said 6 XLR. I thought the 1604 only had 16 quarter inch inputs because it doesn't say anything about XLR. What's better, the 1604 or the 1642?

neither. the 1604 has 16 SEPERATE channel whilst the 1642 has (i believe) 8 SEPERATE channels (1-8) and 4 SHARED channels (9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and 15/16).

it just depends on what you need. the 1604 will give you the option of setting the LEVEL, EQ and PAN of 16 SEPERATE inputs. with the 1642 you have these options on the first 8 inputs,..but the last 4 "share" EQ and VOLUME...and your PAN options are limited.

other differences:
INSERTS: 1604-16, 1642-8
XLR mic inputs: 1604-16, 1642-10
AUX SENDS: 1604-6, 1642-4

there also "some" eq limitations on the stereo-linked channels (not sure on specifics).

both are GREAT mixers. if you several "stereo" sources to be mixed then the 1642 should be ok. if it were me,...i'd go for the 1604 just for the OPTION of 16-channels of COMPLETE tweakability. cheers.

I own a 1604 and it's a reasonably decent portable mixer for live sound. If I was to buy a similar mixer right now, I'd save up a little more and get the Crest XR-20.
