Mackie 1402-VLZ or ?.

I'm planing to do some home recording, will the Mackie 1402-VLZ do the job?
-what mixer woul be best if I'm recordin to a Hard Drive?
-can I use the insets to send each chanel individualy to the computers sound card?

Answer to your 2nd question: Yes.

But, in the 1402 VLZ Pro price range, I'd urge you to check out the Soundcraft Spirit M8 (around $550-600). 8 mono channels, with inserts and DIRECT OUTS!, 3 band, mid-sweep EQ (Mackie doesn't have sweep), 4 auxes (2 pre, 2 post), Ghost pre-amps (should be on par or even better than Mackie's VLZ Pro pre's), 100 mm faders (more control than with the Mackie's 50 or 60mm faders).
And a nice touch: a digital out on the master bus.
 
The Spirit will be as good or better than the Mackie. The EQ's and preamps are better respected.

The Roland Studio Pack for $700 is actually pretty cool if you want an all in one solution. I wouldn't recomend it if you plan on upgrading a lot of components down the road but it will give you a pretty good sound right away. It is limited on preamps, only 2, but you get 8x8 bussing with the computer for mixing and tracking.
