Howdy!

I need a mixing board for those purposes:

- Use the preamps to record vocals, electric guitars and drums then use the insert out to drive all those into the soundcard. I won't use faders for recording or mixing, only the pres. All is done "in the box" afterwards.

- Use it live for my bands PA to mix instruments for small gigs and practice. I won't be using it to mix drums though, only guitars, vocals and bass.

As you can see, the quality of the preamps is perhaps the most important factor here. I know the VLZ pres have an awesome reputation, but I heard the preamps on the Soundcraft M series beat the crap out of the VLZ....but for the price I can get the Yammie, are the pres any good or crap ?

Really, the Yammie is made in china, but costs a whole lot less and offers like 10 pres instead of only 6 for the Mackie...which is just enough to mike a drum set very basically.

I don't need FX at all I have seperate FX boxes for vocals.

Thanx

I don't think you'll find much difference between the two. The deciding factor would be the Yamaha having 10 preamps available if you're going to be micing a drum kit. Good quality mics placed well will factor into the quality of your recordings much more than the choice between the Yamaha or the Mackie.

That's what I was thinking. I keep hearing good things about Yamaha MG series and I've had very good experiences with other Yamaha stuff. For the price they ask, most of their stuff is hard to beat IMHO.
