I was trying to record a vocal using a line out the back of my Mackie Channel Insert into a digital recorder.

There's something baffling in manual about pushing the quarter-inch jackplug in a certain amount, but any way I couldn't get a squawk out of the bugger.

Desperate, because I was really fired up to capture something and because I knew I was being stupid, I stared at the Mackie and my fell on the Headphone output. This has a separate, master-level stereo out from the main mix and will blow your fucking head off, if not used with care.

Bingo! I removed the jack from the Channel Insert, stuck it into the Headphone Out and
promptly lit up the Insert Gain light on my recorder like a very bright thing indeed.

OK, this worked, but are there any Mackie experts out there who can tell me how to use the mic pre-amps directly out to a recorder, please?

It's like this. You can do this in two ways; If you insert a plug to the first "click", you are grabbing signal to send to your recorder and still allowing the signal to be routing thru your mixer as well. If you insert it all the way, you break the internal path in the mixer. You still are grabbing the same signal to send to your recorder but it won't be present at the main out any more. In either case, only the trim pot will affect the signal heading for the recorder, None of the tone, pan, volume or mute buttons will affect that signal. See?

Thanx, TrackRat,

I'll try it tonight. Meanwhile, here's a little cheese for you:
