Hey Everyone!

I hope that someone can help me here because I'm becoming very frustrated with focusrite. I am clearly new to this recording stuff and that's why I'm here. Hopefully someone can help explain stuff to me in "stupid" terms because I'm not up to date on the fancy ones yet. Sooo... My issue:

I have a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24, Cubase, Macbook pro running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5. I have everything hooked up correctly but my computer will not let me select the Saffire as the interface. Well I can select it but nothing happens. The main volume bar for my computer is greyed out and I can not adjust the master volume. I have uninstalled the drivers, re-installed, updated the computer and the mixing station for the saffire and I still can't get sound out of my monitors and my microphone won't pick up. I have adjusted the sound setting on my computer already. I must be missing a simple setting somewhere that is throwing everything off. Can anyone give me some instructions for setup? Screenshots would be helpful too.

Thanks,
Hazy

I always wonder when someone fetches up here with a reasonably tasty set of gears and no clue, how they got it! I am not, I hasten to add, suggesting anything untoward!

I know Jack S about Macs but if you have run the drivers per the book and still cannot get things to work then I would suspect a faulty AI?

I would normally suggest trying the AI on a PC but you will be hard pressed to find one with Firewire, especially these days. If no one here has a comparable rig they will be unable to help much so if you get no more replies soon, pop over to Sound On Sound | Recording Techniques | Audio Technology | Music Production | Computer Music | Video Media and join their forum.

Dave.

Hi,
The greyed out volume adjuster might be normal enough.
I know Motu grey mine out by default. I have to go into their control panel to enable system control of the interface.
I guess this is because they have hardware master volume controls. You're aware of that, right?

On the other hand, I've seen that happen when hardware is recognised but correct drivers aren't installed so...
Go here and double check you've installed mix control 3.5
I can talk you through checking which driver version is installed, if it comes to that.

There shouldn't really be any setup I'm afraid. Other than installing the manufacturers drivers and selecting the interface.
Navigate to audio/midi setup in utilities. Is your focusrite listed and selected for input/output?

Your monitors should be plugged into line outputs 1+2. At a glance I'd have plugged them into the wrong place....double check that.
Unplug one of the monitor jack cables at the interface and touch the tip. You should hear a buzz. If you don't your monitor isn't on, working, or turned up.

Hope that helps.

The main volume bar for my computer is greyed out and I can not adjust the master volume.

If that's your only issue, you should be able to just turn up the "monitor" volume on the interface and get sound.

Just to be clear, do you have studio monitors hooked up to the interface? Or were you going to try to just use the laptop's speakers? Because I'm fairly certain you can't use the built-in laptop speakers while also utilizing an interface, but I'm not positive.

I'm using the Liquid Saffire 56 and a Saffire Pro 40 at the recording studio I work at right now, so I should be able to help with most of your issues.
