I am about to make the leap from longtime analog 4 tracking to building a home studio. I believe I have settled on the digi 002 (the faders appeal to my old schoolness) and would like to go from my old pc to a new mac. I have read that the 002 is having problems with the fw800 dual 1.25 mac, and that there are compatability issues ( pt 6.0.2/osx etc...). If anyone has any advice for this newbie it would be greatly appreciated. It is almost as if I want to spend money on a new mac or pc and a digi 002, but digi doesnt want me to......any suggstions on a setup would be appreciated.....

Hi Shady,

Welcome aboard!

The best advice I can give you is to comb digidesign's website, user conference, and answerbase for what they have to say about the new Macs. Digi's stuff usually works REALLY well, as long as you follow thier rules about what system to use.

OS X support is very new for Digi, so I'd be very careful and read as much as you can before settling on a machine to run it with. It may be in your best interests to go with a slightly older machine that the 002 has a rock solid history with. I'm sure Digi will eventually support the new Mac, but they release patches at a relatively slow rate.

You're probably making a good choice by going Mac with the 002. Many RTAS plugins are availible only for Mac users. PC hardware is still WAY cheaper than Mac hardware, though, so I'm not really sure where the trade-off is. Some of the Mac advantage is moot with OS X, though, as many plugin makers haven't yet created OS X versions. To make matters even more equal, Pro Tools runs extrememly well on Windows XP: it is no longer true that PC's are less stable than Macs.

And I hear you about the faders on the 002! I love mine. I don't really use it much- just a little automation, no big gaudy fader moves- but mixing and editing are so FAST when I have the control surface. I'm pretty sold on it.

Take care,
Chris

Thanks Chris.
I talked to apple who advised me that there should really be no issues with the new 1.25 g4 and 002. although the digidesign 002 website says certain errors may occur that can be remedied by either using a firewire card or installing an additional internal hard drive. Hmmmmm
thanks for the help though. Im still abit torn because if Im going to spend all this money on an 002 and switch to mac, I would like a NEW mac, ya know. I usually am recording 1 or 2 tracks at a time right now, but I am looking to expand my recording abilities/possibilities, so I want a machine that can oblige me. Any advice on the 002 vs. an 002 rack with a mackie control???

I've never used a mackie control, but on paper getting the 002 rack with the mackie box looks better. That way you can upgrade either the 002 or the control unit independently. I love my 002 with built in faders, but I have no upgrade options but to replace the whole thing.

Take care,
Chris

Hey, I just got my new Powermac on sunday and ordered my digi 002 rack and mackie control on monday from sweetwater. He said that they are supposed to get the rack in on friday so hopefully I will get it next week. I figured for now I will just work with one hard drive with a partition and see if there is any progression with the firewire problem. And if not then I'm not sure if I would get the PCI card thing or an internal, but I don't really see it as a big drawback. If I need portability I can just burn to DVD or get a firewire drive to dump to after recording. Another option though is Sweetwater still had some of the Digi 002's in stock that had the Waves plug-in bundle for free, but it didn't have PT 6, so you wouldn't be able to use it with OSX and would have to wait a few weeks for the upgrade. Good luck.
Josh
