Mac software

Hey boys!
I'm considering getting a Mac (powerbook G4), and a firewire multitrack soundcard (M-audio firewire 410??), for basic home "studioing".
I've been using PC previously and there's loads of software to chose from, and they're all easily availible (and "free"..) But I'm guessing this is not the case for mac?
("Garageband" which comes with the mac, seems like CRAP, and doesn't support multitrack recording..)

So,
(1) What good software (multitrack) is there for mac? Expensive? Anything availible for free?
(2) Is M-audio firewire 410 a good choice? And would "all" software work with it?
(3) (side question) Is 512MB RAM enough?

(I'm doing pretty basic stuff. I just want to be able to record several tracks at once and edit them afterwards. Mostly trimming and volume adjustment. (no midi stuff or effects or anything..))

Any "feedback" would be greatly appreciated!

IMHO Garageband is a really solid program sound wise. The lack of multiple recording channels at the same time is a definite negative, but I would imagine that future updates will allow for this since it is everyones first complaint. GB does kind of feel like a resource hog when I'm using it, but again, I think the sound is good.

I don't know your budget, but a lot of usb and firewire interfaces ship with software. I use a Presonus Firepod and the Cubase LE that shipped with it. I'm very happy with the results.

You'll probably want to add more memory eventually. I guess you could run on 512, but you'll probably max it pretty quick. I'm sure some of the more techie guys here can tell you more.

Hope this helps. (?)
