i'll be going to berklee college of music this fall, and they now require all entering students to buy an apple laptop to their specs. so they have a special package you can buy through the school for an insanely low price, that exceeds their minimum requirements. so here's their requirements:

# Apple Titanium G4 PowerBook computer with 15" screen, 1GB G4 processor, 512MB RAM, 60GB Hard Drive, DVD/DVD-R/CDR/CD-RW SuperDrive (burns CD-Rs and DVDs), Airport wireless card, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, USB, FireWire, audio in/out.
# Microsoft Office (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
# Coda Finale (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
# SmartMusic Studio (including updates while enrolled at Berklee); microphone may be included
# Midiman Oxygen8 keyboard controller
# Special version of Propellerheads Reason adapted for Berklee College of Music (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
# AquaMinds NoteTaker
# 4 years of AppleCare extended warranty
# 4 years of Apple Operating System upgrades
# First year of insurance with $100 deductible. Insurance may be extended to include coverage for musical instruments at additional charge.

so....i'm not really familiar with any of the software that comes in this package, and i don't know if there's anything included in that that will do audio recording (dunno if reason does audio or not). so if there is no audio recording program included in that, what is a good multitrack audio recording program for a reasonable price?

Recording software for the mac

I think there is a bunch of cheap
single track recording software.
As for multitrack the prices go from 200 bucks for simple stuff like EMagic Logic, to 500 bugs for EMagic Platinum and Digital Performer to 1000 bucks for Nuendo.

I personally use DP and Love it, though if you are only going to be recording through Midi, Reason would work just as well I think.

doh.

oh.. and the first thing they are gonna teach you is that it is spelled: Berkeley

hehe....Senorklein, wrong Berklee. This one's in bostson and I too am an entering freshman heading into MP&E. FalseRevRG my name is Frank Charlton. Look me up when you get there and I'll hook you up with some cracked copies of Logic Audio Platinum. It good to see another Berklee student on here.

doh again!

hehe.. figures.
That's my Bay Area bias coming into play.

Btw: I saw the Doobie Brothers (well, three of them) give a presentation
at the apple store here in palo alto. They were using Logic Platinum, and it looked really cool. The virtual instruments that they have are pretty darn good.

The only bad part was seeing the doobie bros use generic grooves in their music.

if you've read the page on the computer policies, you'd know that would be a bad idea. you'll get in some serious shit if you have cracked anything on any computer connected to the network. www.berklee.edu/computers for more info.

i will look you up tho, maybe exchange ideas on techniques and such.

eek. didn't see that there...might actually go buy a copy now :) thanks for the warning

as to your original question, we're getting Reason which is a decent recording program

welcome to MAC world of audio.
The Smart Music Studio is 2 track I think. I have only glanced at it.
Reason is sample player plus some. People rave about it.
Oxygen 8 seemed to have a problem OMS only? not sure.
Are you required to do multi track audio? Logic , Digital Performer, PT should be your best bets. Are they running on OS 9 or OSX, would be you r biggest dilemma.
PLug ins are scarce in OSX if you go that route.

Have fun and good luck !!

ok thanx, i wasn't sure if reason did audio or not. i'm using n-track right now, so all i need is something that can handle decent amounts of tracks (sometimes i use 15 or more), and it doesn't have to be super-awesome quality.

Bump.
Just made the transition from PC to the Powerbook G4. I'm looking for a multitrack recording program, and I've been doing research online, but everything looks really over-the-top and crazy. Is there anything like CoolEdit for Macs, something relatively straightforward? I won't be using MIDI or sequencing or anything, just basically recording and minor manipulation of the results.
