Hi there
I want to describe my setup, maybe it will inspire someone.
My computer is a Mac G3 hooked up in sync with my MR8
using Cubase VST.
The ecellent thing with this is that when I've finished my recordings on the MR8 I just simply switch over to USB and Voila
The MR8 shows up on my desktop as a icon, just open it and copy the files into Cubase.

mac

i use a mac also, the mr8 cant be read by a mac through the usb, the card must be inserted into a reader, then the mac will read, the manual states this clearly,,,,,,,

is it wrong, wouldnt be the first time.

Welcome to the Fostex Forum hogge52! Put up some toonz when ya have a chance.

Grrrrrrr....

If it is wrong, I am going to be slightly pissed. I just bought a Dell instead of a Mac!

Well wouldn't that just be my luck.

Me again

Fun with he response

It works !!!
I have a rather old Beige G3 233 with a USB card
and I can transfer files back and forth.
Sync with the MIDI cable and transfer with the USB cable

questions

Started recording on my new MR-8 yesterday and was surprised it wasn't Mac compliant. Went looking for answers and here I am.
?Hogge 52 what version of VST do you use
? Dave in toledo does a card reader work
Has anyone else tried any other recording software with any success ?

Hi there
I'm using Cubase VST 5.
When you are going to use USB with Mac you need to put the extension "USB masstorage extension" or something like that.
When I first hook my MR8 up I bought a card reader and installed the drivers for it. That work too. A few days ago I by mistake went to USB in the MR8 menu, and there it was, on the desktop on my MAC.
Every file, even those you normally delete when you use "Delete unused"

Don't worry, I have a dell also and it works grrreat with the MR-8. I just use the USB and the wave manager.

welcome Hogge52!

I'm using an MR-8 with an iMac and a card reader. Software is Pro Tools Free. Works great. Sound is good, platform is stable. Playback goes out of the Mac to a mixer and studio monitors and/or earphones.

Skip cardreader

Hi
Try to switch to USB on the MR8 while you have the USB-cable connected and you will find out that you don't need the card reader !

pro tools

I have the pro tools free and tried to import the converted wave file. The result was a disaster. both tracks on the same track with a split in the middle. half a wave on one side half on the other Sounds like garbage.
I used a simple audio conversion from the headphone jack into the mac in Toast and it sounded great but I'd really like to use the pro tools if I can figure it out.
Any ideas on what I'm not doing right?

Mac MR8

i am glad I found this forum, but need a bit more help...
I like the MR8, nice and simple to use, but I recently got a Mac and was having real trouble getting the WAV manager to work. I downloaded the file, but the dialog boxes come up in japanese and it will not recognize the WAV files I have on my computer.
I read this thread and tried the USB connect thing and sure enough it works for getting files from the MR 8 to the Mac, but I cannot get the MR8 to see the tracks after I have put the on the CF flash via USB. When I put the CF card in the reader it sees the files, but it wont play them on the MR 8.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I can verify.

I have also moved wavs to my mac by connecting the MR-8 directly. Here are the requirements to hook it up.

Mac OS 8.6 or higher
USB Mass Storage Support (can be downloaded at support.apple.com)
MR-8 software vers. 1.3? Not sure, I have 1.4, but I'm assuming 1.3 will work.

I've been using a 20$ flash card reader with my MR-8, it seems much less of a hassle than having to reboot every time I want to download tracks.

So what is the advantage of protools over other programs, namely n-tracks?

What do you mean "rebooting every time"
I just switch to USB on my MR8 and the card shows up on my desktop !

Here's an odd phenom. I used my mr8 to record a session at a friends house last night. Set on extented and micking off a PA feed.Everything was going good till the counter hit 60.00min. Although I still had 23 min of memory left the machine quit recording????.
Still havn't got Pro Tools working, downloading mass storage wouldn't work .

sorry! but each song on the mr8 can only be 60 minutes long. regardless of how much recording time you have left. i had to find out the hard way too! and I think it's stupid! a Fostex rep said they had no plans on eliminating this 'feature'. check out the thread on this forum labeled "60 minute limitations w/ MR8" for more info.

Just went to the(www.fostex.com) web site and they now have a wave manager program for the mac posted for download. This might solve a lot of problems.

Many Questions

So, basically you can just hook up USB to the Mac and it will work? My Card Reader seems to be working though. It shows up on my Desktop and voila, I click open the folder and there are the .wav file/s. Is Cubase simple to use? How do you open up the .wav files that you want to edit with Cubase? WHat version do you have again? And what is this about, on playback its sent back out to the mixer? Do you mean that on playback it is sent out ot an external hardware mixer? What do you mean by on playback, and what is the point of sending out back to an external mixer? I could see this route: Recorder->Mixer->Computer for Mastering, but Recorder->Computer for Mixing->External Mixer?? How would htat set up work, and why would it be beneficial? Also, is the Mass Storage by Apple a good thing to download, even if the Card Reader seems to be working properly? Thanks for all the comments.

Chris
