Does anyone know how well it would work (mac mini) for a very small recording station using USB based recording equipment? Would the Ibook lap top be better?

The mac mini has its advantages, but also has its disadvantages.

Pros:

Portable
Powerful for its size
Tis a mac ;)

Cons:

Unable to upgrade
Not the most powerful thing on the market
...you could misplace it?

I have only used one for about an hour or so, and i found it to be quite slow, although im running a G5 with 4gb of ram. I guess it all depends on how many simultaneous inputs your going to be having going on. It could handle 1-3 alright i guess, but if you started to add effects, inputs, etc. it could start to slow down on you.

Like i said, im not a mac mini owner, but thats my 2 cents.

Hope that helps,

All the best,

The more the better

As a MAC fan I like the mini but it depends on how small the setup will be. As with any computer recording setup, the more resources the better. The mini is limited on the memory upgrade (only up to 1GB). I have a G5 IMAC with a gig using a firepod and cubase and it can be challenged. I also have a G4 powerbook and have tried to use it as a portable setup but the G4 is just not powerful enough with 512 to do the job over 3-4 tracks.

If you are only talking about a couple of tracks over USB or Firewire then it may be ok. I don't think you will get much more than that without frustration.

Good luck.
