i use a mac mini (500 megs of ram), garage band 3, with tascam fw-1884. the input volume levels don't match between the tascam and garage band. levels on the tascam show volume clipping but in garage band levels shown in record / monitor is not clipping at all.
garage band preferences set to 1884 inputs and outputs.
any help will be greatly appreciated so volume level on fw-1884 matches volume level shown in garage band,
thank you.

you need to become aware of the fact that the 1884 has different "pages" of monitoring... that is to say the monitor mix button (look at the four top buttons on the right) affects the incoming signal... while the computer button afffects the signal going to and from the recorder (computer)... make sense??? so it would be possible to distort the input (monitor mix) and then record it (distorted) but at a level that's not hot (computer) and play it back at still a third level (computer)...

Odd question, but do you have the box checked in GarageBand that says "auto adjust input signal"?

do this

since you already have a mac. sell your tascam and just buy and mbox with pro tools (HAHA.... EXSPENSIVE AS HELL). or. you can just get a cheaper interface to use with garage band. m-audio makes some interfaces for reasonable prices. way easier to use than a digital 8 track along with garage band. and it will more than likely sound better. i have a mac book pro with protools LE 7.4 and its very nice. the only thing im upset about is there are only 2 inputs on the mbox. but that is easily solved with 2 mixers. 1 for drums and one for everything else. it works pretty well for live recordings. plus with pro tools you can modulate the hell out of your tracks with all the cool lil effects you get free. even tho it costs alot it will be worth it
