Never used a Mac, but I was thinking for portability a Mac mini with the 1.66 dual core Intel processor and 2GB ram might do just fine for live tracking. Compared to a laptop, how do you think that would do?

Yes, I have considered the monitor issue.....

I regularly run 16 channels of 24 bit/48k audio on a Powerbook. Why bother with the mini? Too much trouble in the field.

I can fit everything I need in a 4U padded rack case (2U of preamps/interfaces for 16+ channels, a power conditioner, shelf for external firewire drive (to record to ) and laptop.

Don't see a benefit to a mini, especially since you can get a perfectly capable iBook for the same price (and it will come with a screen, unlike the mini).

My friend has a mac mini, i've used it on several occasions. Its not really the GREATEST of macs, thats for sure. I've only used i think garageband on that though, started to lag heavily with several tracks and effects.

I've heard iBooks aren't the greatest for recording as they can't handle alot, but is probably the equivalent as the Mac Mini.

Personally, if you can't afford the higher end Macs, i wouldn't recommend it in a recording environment, because i was thinking the same thing but i was told theres no point getting a mac unless its one of the more expensive models whereas you can get a perfectly fine PC for the same price as those low-end macs.

Im still a fan of macs, and my next computer/laptop will be one, but don't get one unless your willing to fork out the bigger bucks...IMHO.

Since when do MacBooks cost $799?

iBook, not MacBook. An iBook with decent specs (over 1ghz processor and at least 768 RAM) should be fine for audio work.

you have to realise these things only come with 128MB RAM too...
