Unless I missed something, Apple is not being purchased by Microsoft. Apple will, however, start using Intel chips in its computers starting with a series of laptops. Nobody knows how this will effect current Apple owners, software developers, etc. unless you are clairvoyant. Basically anything at this point is just speculation. So, should you buy a G5 and recording software now? I would say yes if that's the system you want, if you have the cash, and if you are comfortable with macs and OSX. The G5 will not stop working in 2007 and by then you will probably want a new, more powerful computer anyway. On the other hand, I suppose you could make do with your current system (if you have one) or simply not record anything until 2007 or 2008. But think of all the fun you'de miss--not to mention all the songs that would never be recorded. The computer industry changes with the weather and at some point you just have to say WTF and jump in. Personally, I wouldn't try to overthink this one unless I had Apple stock in my portfolio.
