Boy, am I a Newbie:

I've decided on building my first home recording system. However, I have some questions before I make my initial purchase. First of all. I've decided on buying the following Mac computer:

A new 800 Mhz Power Mac G4 computer from Apple Store consisting of:
1. 512 MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM
2. 2x80 GB Ultra ATA drive
3. SuperDrive
4. ATI Radeon 7500 dual
5. 17" Mitsubishi monitor
6. Zip 250 Drive

It's not a "barebones" computer but comes with the usual programs found on a G4.

I want to buy Cubase software but I'm still confused as to which version of Cubase I should purchase. The CubaseVST 5.1 states that offers "32 Bit studio quality." But the Delta 1010 PCI Digital Audio sustem comes "with 24-bit/96khz bandwith." Are the two systems compatiable?

And I will have to install the Cubase and the Delta 1010 using OS 9,1 correct?

I took some of the information that I've been gathering over the last few months about building a home recording system to a service manager at my local CompUSA. He said he could install the equipment, but he was concerned that the Delta 1010 might need "drivers." A question I was unable to answer. Does anyone have any answers out there?

Here's another silly question. I also plan to purchase the JBL LSR Powered Studio monitors. How do I ensure that they will connect to the computer? What type of connection do I use? I'm almost positive I will have to use some sort of adaptor.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I just hate to spend thousands of dollars and find I've purchased the wrong material. I hope to learn the system I've purchased quickly and then continue with the additional equipment.

Thank you,
framos

First of all, are you set on getting a Mac? The reason I ask is what you're about to buy is around $2,500 (sans monitor), which is a load of money to spend on a computer of that performance. Secondly, if you do decide to get a Mac, don't buy extra memory or extra hard drives from Apple. Go over Newegg and save yourself some money. You're really getting screwed on the hard drives.
Are the two systems compatiable?
Yes, plenty of people use Cubase and the 1010 every day with great results.
And I will have to install the Cubase and the Delta 1010 using OS 9,1 correct?
Yes. This is another thing - you're going to spend close to $3,000 on a computer that has no memory protection, no multitasking, no virtual memory that's worth mentioning, etc... OS X adds all these features, but app availability is sparse right now.
He said he could install the equipment, but he was concerned that the Delta 1010 might need "drivers."
All hardware needs drivers. You are aware that installing the Delta 1010's PCI card is relatively easy and painless process, right? Driver installation is just a matter of visiting M-Audio's website, downloading the drivers, and installing them.
How do I ensure that they will connect to the computer?
They're not going to connect to your computer, not directly anyway. The JBL's will hook up to the Delta 1010's breakout box via two of the eight available 1/4" outputs. The connections available on the JBL's are XLR or RCA, so pick your adapter and use it.

What's really frightening is that you're about to plop down around $4,000 and are asking questions whose answers are easily available on the manufacturers' websites. This says to me you have done little to no research about any of the products you're planning on purchasing. You need to assess your needs and then do some research and figure out what products will let you do what you need to do.
