I know a mac is the best source for recording music but I have a pc for now. My question is that I have window xp on my computer running PT le 8 and I wanted to put windows vista on it. should I just leave it be or add vista. What is the advantages and disadvantages of both xp and vista?

Leave XP.

From what I hear, Vista is much more CPU/RAM intensive to run - so your computer will in effect be less powerful!

As they say, if it ain't broke....

More importantly, why would you want to put Vista on it when Vista is GOING AWAY shortly.

Windows7 (really Vista2) is said to be running much better.

But - and think about this for a minute - It's far better to WAIT a year or so until a new OS is shaken out and all the bugs/patches/etc are locked down and everything is known to work. Otherwise you're just beating your head against the wall, screaming, non-productive and being an unpaid beta-tester.

Unless you've got something that will ONLY run on Vista, cool your jets and wait till the new candy WORKS....

can someone please tell me why? i've never had a compatibility issue with my PC and any of my recording software, and i can build a PC that outperforms any given mac for less money.

no, my PC is not super duper susceptible to viruses... i use a good anti-spyware/anti-virus, i don't torrent things, and i don't go to sketchy websites. I know a bit about computers, so i can maintain it, and fix any problems that may arise.

Better computing power for less money? Yes Please.

it seems to be the opinion based on the movements of the 'average user'

in response to this,,,

the average user doesnt, does, does, doesn't, can't and cant :) lol

gonna be gettin' my new HD-2 setup tomorrow centered around a PC with Windows Vista-32. Eventually, once Digi says Windows 7 is compatible, I'll upgrade to that.

I heard the same complaints about Vista on PC's, but since I'm getting a Core i7 with 6GB of RAM...I'm hoping it's not going to be too much of a problem. Of course, anything is a step up from where I'm at right now.

Ben... you're going to PT8?;)

yes...FINALLY.
My TDM card started failing me last week so that pushed us to upgrade sooner than we planned. But I'm not complaining! The last time I used a newer version of PT was 6.9...that was when I had my 002 a few years back. I haven't even gotten to play much with 7.x let alone 8!! I'm excited!

And excited to be running a faster computer that will handle more than one TDM reverb
Hopefully I'll be more active around here once I realize what you guys are talking about, lol
