M/S recording with 2 figure 8 mics?

I got into a discussion about this with someone earlier.
I know that the "Mid" mic would generally be a cardoid pattern, but it has been suggested to me that a figure 8 pattern for the Mid mic sounds better. I don't have 2 figure 8 mics to experiment with. I was just wondering if anybody else had done this and what were the results.

I've been poking around in this a bit lately too. It's likely more where you want them picking up. From Everest's 'Stereo Soundbook, Fig-8 plus cardioid (at equal mix) gives you the pattern of two hyper-card's spread 66 degrees. I.e., most of the pick up is from the front. With two fig-8's it's front/back equally.
