Hello all,

My name is Tim, and I'm trying to get some clear, informed answers about an issue I'm having. I recently began setting up a home studio. I purchased the M-Audio Profire 2626 interface, Cakewalk Sonar 8PE, and an HP Pavilion DV9925NR notebook. The notebook is Vista 64, sp1, AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60, 2 Ghz, 4GBRAM, Ricoh firewire control, 5400 harddrive.
I've been all over different forums looking for answers and have come up with a few scenarios. I know now that Ricoh chips aren't the best for low latency recording, and I know that my hard drive speed should be higher. My problem has been getting the interface to detect with my laptop. I have been able to use the Profire with Cakewalk on my laptop, and have recorded just some basic things to familiarize myself with the system. However, I always end up with the message 'M-Audio Profire control panel has stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available'. Usually, but not always, I can power off and back on, and my mixer comes back up. Mostly, It will give that message, then it will give me a 'device not detected message', and my blue power indicator will flash. I have had it operational for up to 3 hours, recording.

I've been advised to the following:
- Ricoh no good, need TI---Buy an Express card with a TI chip.
My questions on this are, does this really make a difference being that the port I'd plug the card into, is still being operated by the Ricoh control, and if not, what is a good Express card to get for my application, as I have listed above?

- Some laptops are just not designed for low latency recording.
This makes more sense to me, even though I really have no basis as to why. My questions here are, is there anything I can do to my existing laptop to enable it to be a better low latency recorder? I guess I'm thinking of switching things out, etc. Second, what laptops are being used with TI chips, that are operating your interfaces with no issues? I've had several people tell me that they run with Ricoh and no issues. I'm looking for something that is a newer model, being a PC. I'm having enough issues with my equipment that I don't need to add a learning curve on MAC.

Looking at what I have equipment wise, are there any other recommendations or learnings that you can share with me? I'm finding myself spending way too much time researching and fixing, and not near enough time playing, creating, and recording. I'm currently recording a drumset that is subbed to four inputs into the Profire, with a potential of six simutaneous inputs. There will also be a click track playing while recording, etc.

I appreciate any time and learnings you provide this request.

Tim

One other thing, How do I address the hard drive speed issue if I am still able to use my existing laptop?

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the link Hard2Hear. I appreciate the info.
