Both firewire...both have preamps..both have multiple inputs and outputs...
now which one is actually better? i'm going to be buying one of them.

i'd go m-audio, just from past experiences with their products. i have never really owned any presonus interfaces so i can't comment on or compare the 2.

How are the pres on the 410s?

From what I heard of them they are very usable. I used the firewire solo for a month or so and used the onboard pre for a few vocal takes and no real complaints. Now I'm using a 1010, I own the Bx5's and Dx4's and DMP3 amongst other things so that's why I said I would go M-Audio, I haven't gotten a crappy piece of gear from them yet so I support them.

I'm sure Presonus is just as good however, I just personally haven't owned any of their gear.

depends on the computer your hooking it up to, and how. I like the firebox, but compatability issues keep me from fully supporting it; I hook it up through firewire cardbus into a laptop and had lots of issues getting it fully up and running. In fact I'm having issues with it still (it doesn't play nice with NEC chipsets), but when it works I like it. I certainly think the preamps are nice and clean.

Im gonna go with the 410's. because i think the overall quality are about the same. and the 410 has much more versality than the firebox. seperate monitor controls, more outputs, assignable controls etc...

I had the firebox for about 5 months, loved it, had to sell it. The pres are great for the price and its very stable...i recently saved up and got the focusrite saffire which i love also, the pres are a little warmer than the firebox and i think the overall sound quality is better and included software (Saffire Control).

i used to own the firepod (bigger version) and i liked it. M audio will come with pro tools wont it? if it does i would go with that, but, presonus = good pres

but are the 410's pres good?? atleast better than my current behringer mixer ones??

i think they are definitely better than any behringer pre's, IMHO.

There's probably not to many people who've owned or used both units. The firepod's pres are good. They're Class A, for whatever that's worth. You can turn them right up to clipping point if you need to, and they don't get harsh or brittle the way my old Yamaha pres would. I'm guessing the firebox would use the same pres

I've owned the Firebox for 6 months and have had zero issues with it. No complaints about the pre's, they're decent but I'm also using rather inexpensive, shall we say, mics. So with higher end mics there might be a more noticable difference than I can hear.

I use the Firebox on both an XP machine and a G3 800 iBook, no issues with either as far as setup and use.

I'd go with the 410. I used to use a Behringer mixer and the 410 pres are a lot better. Not near as harsh. Its also compatible with Pro Tools which is a big plus for me. Customer support is quick as well. If you're planning on recording a whole band look at the 1814.

The closest I can do is to compare the FW1814 with the FirePod (the big brothers of the two interfaces you're asking about). I'd probably lean towards the Presonus. Between the FW1814 and the FirePod, the FirePod has better pres (IMHO) and is more reliable in general. Since this comparison isn't even apples & oranges, but more like oranges & grapefruit, though, YMMV....
