I will start by saying, I am completely new too recording. I make music with a sampler, drum machine and synth. and source from t.v., gameboy etc.. I record analog though the single phono inputs on my hifi

so what I want to be doing, is recording straight onto my laptop, ....I gather you can record straight into garage band, then export it straight onto itunes...so for instance I could record A live performance...and then burn CD's to give out afterwards.

I have a few questions though,

why do most of the interfaces have so few inputs and so many outputs? excuse my ignorance but what are the outputs for? Arnt imputs the most important????
has the machine only got 2 inputs? Excluding midi

im not really into using software, I like to mix and record analog improvise...so I want to be able to plug all my equipment into this thing so when ever i want to record something I can just press rec on garage band and get it straight on itunes.

so, am I looking at the right piece of equipment here? I dont really want to pay any higher...so is there anything better suited...or will this do the job

thanks to anyone who has the time to reply

iain.

Hey Iain

I'm not exactly sure how many instruments vocals you are trying to record.
The 410 gives you 5 inputs.
2 - MIC XLR inputs and 2 - 1/4 Line inputs, and 1 MIDI input.

If you have more than four instruments, then you need to either get a mixer or something like a MOTU 828 or the ECHO FireAudi8 or FireAudio12. There are others, but they are even more expensive.

The outputs are for Monitoring Speakers (like the M-audio website states "8 analog outs can directly drive up to 7.1 surround") hence the 8 outs, or you could use a Y cable and plug some Heaphones in for tracking, or to send to a Heaphone pre-amp to send to several Headphones.
You could also use the outs to send to compressor, Reverb, whatever and send it back to the soundcard or to a headphone for tracking.

Here is the 410 site. You may want to read up on the manual before you buy to see what it can do for you.

thanks for the info man,

I have 3 instruments...a microkorg, a dr.sample202 and a alesis 16-r

Im not to up to busniess on midi, but if one of those worked normaly though midi i guess it could work out, and that would still give me space to put a source though the sampler.

cheers. I didnt get that link though. but il try to find it
