Hey guys, whats up! :) I'm new to this forum website, so first off, I want to say hi to everyone :) and I'm also new to recording and mixing. I recently bought the Audio Technica AT2020 condenser mic and bought the M-Audio Fast track 2 interface. I'm having some problems whilst recording. I record vocals only, and when I record then play it back, I always hear fuzzyness and it sounds as if my headphones are gonna EXPLODE!! its absolutely terrible. The software I use is called, Cool edit pro (trial version). I don't know if its my interface, mic or software that is causing this horrible sound. It sounds sh*t for £200's worth!!

Thanks in advance, Sean.

I have a feeling your interface pres are clipping. When you record does the red light on your Fast Track come on? If so, you need to turn down your mic gain.

Can you post a sample recording?

Have you got an email or can i send you the link via message? its not letting me post the link via this post. Its giving me a message saying, "you will be able to post links to other site once you have made 10 posts or more"

What guitarplayer says. Check your settings on the Fast track.

I've deleted your other post, which was the same as this one

Can you private message it to me? Or break up the link some way so the site doesn't think it's a link?

Okay, so after listening to that track I feel there is a different problem here. I think you are unintentionally recording with your computer's built in mic rather than your AT2020. That recording doesn't sound like something an AT2020 would produce. I think you need to check your audio input settings inside Cool Edit and make sure your input is the Fast Track and not something else.

The input is 'Microphone Fast Track' It should be 'M-Audio Fast Track' right?

Internal Mic
External Mic
Stereo Mix
Microphone Fast Track

Hmm... Microphone Fast Track seems like the most logical choice, but apparently it didn't work before. Try selecting Microphone Fast Track again, plug in your mic, turn phantom power on, set up a new track in Cool Edit, and tap on the mic. Tell me if you get any signal in Cool Edit.

I just realised that I recorded that through my internal mic  You were right enough!! I'm sorry for this, It should have stayed on Fast track option. But for some reason it changed back to internal mic. sorry buddy, but I really appreciate it that you tried to help me. Its ok now. But I'm going to move on from cool edit pro, it sucks. What software would you recommend? :)

Awesome, I'm glad you got it working! As for software, I'm guessing you're on Windows? I don't know too much about Windows recording software, but maybe try Reaper? There's a free trial that you can use for as long as you want and it's pretty cheap when you decide you want to buy it. There is tons of support on this site for Reaper users too.
