M-Audio DMP3's VS. Mackie 1202VLZ Pro12 mixer preamps

hello,

I'm in the market for a decent preamp that is in the $200 range.
I'm looking to buy two units because I need 4 inputs. My question is should I go and buy two M-Audio DMP3's for $400 or should I just get the Mackie 1202VLZ Pro12 mixer $400? Which preamps are better...do people who own mackie mixers really just use the preamps on them or do they most generally buy other preamps to use with their mixer?

The mackie preamps are really good for the money, and yes, people do buy them and use them just for the pres.

The dmp3, in my opinion is just a hair better, and the only reason I say this is because I have found it has a little bit more gain, it's a hair quieter, and it seems to have just a sliver more high-end detail.

Don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise; both the mackies and the dmp3 are some seriously good pres - ridiculously good when you consider their price. Either one is a good choice, so your decision should be based on whether a mixer would come in handy or not. If you don't think you'll be needing a mixer for anything, then get the dmp3s.
 
I'd get a mixer. The Soundcraft M is supposed to have better pre's and EQ then the mackie for the same price.
 
If you go the preamp route, get a DMP3 and a Joe Meek and something else....different flavors.....

with a mixer, you are stuck with one sound...of course you have the added value of all the routing capablities.....
