I'm thinking about (relatively) inexpensive ideas for my Christmas list... and once again, the 1010LT comes to mind. Here's my main question:

It boasts 10 inputs, so how many of these can you use at once?

10, 2 digital and 8 analog. Same for the outs.

Excluding the mic pre's and 2 digital, there are 6 if I remember right.

While I've used the 1010LT, and like it, I popped for an Alesis IO|2 and it is working out really well. Easy to set up, worked right out of the box without hassle, the preamps drive my Shure SM7B, my monitors sound great through it, and it has some neat bells and whistles. For the same price as the 1010LT I think Alesis offers the big brother of what I got. Adjusting the sound level on the 1010LT was a bit of a pain, with the Alesis I just turn the knob.

Wouldn't hurt to look.

I have a 1010lt and as Kevin pointed out you can use all 10 in and out if you so choose. You can use more than one card for double the ins and outs.

yes but there are only 6 line inputs and then another 2 that are have pre amps and then 1 digital rca input. the other input is a midi so really if you are using amixer with direct outs you only have 9 channals.

No, there are 8 analogue inputs, 2 of which can take either a mic or a line level signal (by switching jumpers on the board). I used a 1010LT and always used ins 1&2 as line level inputs.

Plus MIDI in and out and spdif in and out makes 10 in and 10 out in total (8 analogue, 1 MIDI and 1 digital).

I just wanted to make sure - I want to be able to do multiple mics at once. Plus, scratch tracking will be a whole lot easier if everyone can get their own channel.

Oo, and the fun of not having to premix the drums down into stereo!

I believe the s/pdif input is stereo so that's 2 inputs. Midi is not usually counted as an input

The xlr connector can be used as line or mic inputs. If you need the extra gain, put the jumper on the board in, if you don't and plan to use it as line level in, take it out.

If you get one, first thing you should do is mark all the ins/outs on the breakout cable with labels or tape/pen. It's impossible to read the print on the plugs.........down on your knees, behind the pc, 50 cables in the way......

Don't waste your time trying to use the built in preamps. They're useless.

Switch all the output crossover points to OFF. Default on mine was 80 hz.

Turn your speakers way down until you get the hang of the mixer app. I wonder how many delta users have blasted themselves with feedback while figuring out the mixer window.

Set the inputs and outputs at the same level so that what goes in is what comes out.

If you're on windows xp, you can set your system volume independent of your recording app volume in control panel > sounds and audio devices.

I think the 1010lt is a good bang for buck card (if you really need 8 analog ins/outs).

.........one more.........don't be tempted by those Hosa molded snakes. They're crap. For the same price, you can make your own hi quality snakes.

Good call,...a snake and a patch panel makes working with the pigtail arrangement much nicer.

How would you recommend making your own snakes? I bought one of those stupid Hosa molded 2 channel things thinking that I could simplify running the 2 channels out of my mixer for my PA. They worked for all of about a month.

Since you already have the Hosa cable, I would cut off the molded connectors and solder on some all metal connectors..........assuming that the cable itself is still good. Every cable failure I've experienced has either been at the solder joints on the connector or in the cable just behind the connector.

If you want to make your own snake from scratch, I would get some multi-pair cable and any connectors you need from Mouser, JacksMusicStore, PartsExpress, or Markertek. There are some good deals on Ebay too if you know what you're looking for.

This is all assuming that you can solder and have a decent soldering iron.
