M-Audio comparison

Thanks all for your enlightening responses. I ended up getting the Audiophile 24/96 because I only track 1 or 2 tracks at a time. I have never had a noise issue on my computer, except the stupid fan, CAN YOU HEAR ME?

The card is actually amazing. I had been using the DMAN PCI from Midi-man prior, which I thought was quite good. Suddenly all of my plug ins sound much better i.e. tails on reverbs, compression is more accurate and I seem to have more sensitivity when boosting or cutting an effect, meaning the sliders are much more accurate. Overall sound is about 80% studio sounding. I noticed a big difference even in files I recorded on the old card.

This all makes me think that the file comparing tests here at HR BBS i.e., mic tests, pre tests and the like, are virtually irrelevant. Depending on the sound system and audio card, what may sound good on one person’s speakers could sound entirely different on another.

There was some good advice on another thread which I took to heart which was, “If you are going to improve your sound you need to work backwards in the signal chain” I think this is great advice as I was working the other direction and was not seeing results i.e. C1 mic, new speakers etc. Although these really sound better with the new card so my advice to others is put your money in the AD converters and the rest will be good (If you build it right they will come)

My next purchase is a mic pre and I am waiting to see what RNC and Studio Projects come up with here shortly.

Going even further back in the chain is the source itself. Better instruments, new strings, in-tune drum heads, a singer who took the time to warm up his/her voice . . .

Worry about that before the a/d conversion.
