Hello all,
My name is Rick AKA Kappy,, very new to pc recording, let alone any recording, quick question, I recorded my acoustic Guitar yesterday, plugged in to my interface. is it possible to hear the playback through my pc speakers? or can you just hear it through the plugged in headphones, I have a feeling I will be asking a ton of stupid questions, this looks like the site that will benifit me a ton.. I purchased some nice Klipsch also, sound is unreal, 2.1 and a top of the line pc..

hopefully I won't give up and be able to record and send some music, with video down south to my family, that has been asking for years, not a great singer, think I can get by yikes... good to meet ya"ll I thnaks for any help now and in the future.. oh does anyone have this same set up, the m- audio mobilepre protools SE

you will also notice my spelling sucks.. thanks Rick

You can if you connect them to the outputs of your interface. :) You will need some cable adapters tho.

As Jimmy69 says, it will be far easier for you to just connect your PC speakers to the M Audio interface. I'm not a Protools LE user but, in most DAW software, there can be driver issues trying to use a different sound card for playback than the one you use for recording. You'll need an adaptor cable to do this (also as Jimmy69 says).

However, it's probably also worth saying that any typical PC speakers really won't be up to the job of providing critical monitoring for music production. Eventually, you need to consider getting something a bit better (though I understand the need to get started with something).

Jimmy,
I saved the project in my documents, now with the interface unplugged, can I open with another program and play back? about the cable adaptors, the one for the speakers is just an 1/8 jack, should plug right in the out line
correct? also will I have to go back and forth with the speakers depending on what I want to listen too. bobby, these are not your typical speakers, by getting something a bit better, do you mean speakers? I am going to be in trouble quick on here lol, with all these newbie questions, I do look through older post, to see if I can find something.
thanks for the input Rick

The general approach is to use the interface for all recording and playback, and to forget about built in audio.
I guess that's what yo mean when you talk about 1/8 inch jacks and going back and forth etc?

What model are your speakers?

Monitors/good speakers usually connect to your interface via two cables; One for left and one for right.

Interfaces usually have a 1/4 inch TRS jack for each side and most modern powered monitors will accept TRS 1/4 jack, xlr, or at least rca.

If your speakers have 1/8" jack, you may need a cable like this
Depending what you have it might need to be female 1/8" instead of male. IDK.

Actually, this is a quite difficult cable to find. It must be either made at home or pieced together.

To go the easy route, you need THIS and THESE.

These will connect to the LINE OUTs on the rear of your MobilePre. Your speakers into the other end. Select your MobilePre as your default sound device in Windows. All of your audio will play through the interface and your speakers. And of course select it as your ASIO device in ProTools.

:D

ok thanks. another thing I have my headphones plugged into the m-audio, I selected a demo just to hear this, man it is all scrambled
at least I can hear something, I am going to be very difficult for you guys.. sorry, never did anything like this, been playing and trying to sing also for over 30 years.. think I would know something, always just used a cassette deck Jimmy thanks for this, and these, just what I need. I will be going to tech support also.. soon I will get the hang of this stuff.. figured I would be alset for now with my head phones plugged into it.. That could be a driver issue. Have you downloaded the appropriate driver for your interface model and operating system from HERE?

Jimmy I will try again, from the website, I followed directions, loaded the m-audio moblepre disc first, then said plug in the interface, then when i loaded the pro tools SE cd, then load the driver, it was already loaded, so I did not do it again, I will unplug the interface and load the driver again see what happens.. thanks ok went to the website and downloaded the driver again, same issues, playback cracking, can make out the music lots of noise, this is going to drive me nuts, just getting started, I have windows 7 64bit. I will try contacting support, have been reading tons of FAQ in forums also..

I bought the cables I needed at radio shack all stereo too. they had them all, female 1/8 to 2 1/4 y connector stereo and then 2 1/8 female to 1/4 male stereo, should work perfect. thanks the ones u showed were the RCA male ends in the y.. right? anyway see what happens. thanks. I am going to try and do a lot more research before I drive u guys crazy.. thanks for all the help. Rick

Cool, let me know. By the way, what else do you have running via your USB ports. USB interfaces do not play well with say, an external drive sharing the USB controller. Sometimes the actual port you use can make a difference as well. Maybe try another port and/or cable.

nothing else running off a USB I will let you know when I get this figured out.. did not try anything new yet, I only have the one USB that came with the interface, thanks

Jimmys
so I have been reading up a little, bout time huh.. I looked in my device manager and i see, under other devices,
2 unknown devices with exclamation marks on them, I think these are the drivers for the interface, that did not install correctly.

both of them the.. properties says the driver for this device is not installed, code 28, would it be wise to uninstall the protools, and start over? most likely this is my problem.. duh.. I have not messed with this driver stuff sense windows 95

you agree ? wonder why, I did it from the disc, and the website to make sure it was updated. thanks Rick

looks like it is working right...
I tried to add print screen.. would not let me..

no not yet, what I meant by working right, the driver, in the device manager,do not know what the other 2 are with the exclamations.. think I will just leave them alone..been watching some of the vids on m-audio site
geee they really want you to make some serious changes to your pc.. not doing all that.. disable some important
files and programs..

I doubt they would recommend disabling 'important' files and programs. Optimization of your PC is quite important, especially if your computer isn't juicy-multi-core goodness. :D

Just depends on what is most important to you. What type of things did the vids mention? Or just give me the link and I'll watch it myself. You only need two more posts before you can add links. :)

Geee Jimmy I can't remember everything I have been watching and reading, I must have saved 15 links of info.
when I get home I will send you some links. I have a nice machine.

windows 7 64 bit
I7-2600 3.8ghz
8gb ddr

thing is fast. talk later

Yeah, you have just about the same system as I. Is it an OEM Windows install, or a store bought variety? I ask only because store purchased machines carry a bunch-strike that, a buttload of unnecessary 'bloatware' that can severely eat up resources. These are not 'important' files or programs. Things like Aero, that W7 comes with to make it pretty, eat up valuable CPU power. Pretty does not equate to useable. Things like antivirus programs and even a normal W7 service like 'Superfetch', is not necessary for your PC. Superfetch is a program that helps to learn your usual tasks, and holds up your ram to pull up your favorite places quickly. It saves you maybe 2 or 3 seconds in pulling up a task by running directly from ram, but it interrupts things like streaming music, or anything that uses your ram to run. These are things that optimizing for a certain task does. It is not getting rid of things you need. It is disabling things that are taking up your resources, and giving you less power to make the things you want to run smoothly fail.

Trust me, if you want to record on your PC, the steps that are given by almost any interface manufacturer, are safe and necessary.

of course I trust you Jimmy he he, I have the store bought pc form hpdirect, I agree with what you are saying, still have not figured out the volume playback issue, I was thinkng I need to make my interface the default sound card, would you agree with this? with my luck it won't work and then i will not be able to get my sound back.. think this will be the last thing I try, if it does not work, then I am going to return it..

here is the link with the video's. I don't know if I mentioned this, I try to go to the PDF manual, file from the protool website, and every time, internet exploror stops working, on my work pc it is fine, so I don't get it..
