I'm in the process of upgrading an older MOTU 828 to include an external preamp and AD converter. I recently purchased a Great River Me-1nv single channel preamp and I'm looking at the Lucid 9624 for AD conversion. I plan on running the 9624's optical OUT to the 828's optical IN and setting the MOTU clock source to "Optical" rather than "Internal". I assume that the 9624 is a better clock source than the MOTU 828. I also assume that since the 9624 has no BNC output, the clock signal is carried by the optical OUT. Is this correct?

I was also thinking about adding an external clock generator, perhaps something like the Lucid Genx6. My only concern, however, is that that the Genx6 clock signal could not be sent directly to the MOTU 828. The older 828 lacks a word clock input, so the clock signal would be "daisy-chained" through the 9624 AD converter. Should I consider that setup as adequate or would it be worthwhile to upgrade my older 828 to a new 828mkii with wordclock input or perhaps a Metric Halo ULN2.
