Well, things are not as bad as they once were. I've been thinning the herd. So far in the last two years I've gone from 16 to 9, and four of those are Fender basses.
I have sold or traded the Gretsch, a Ventura copy of a Country Gent that I used for slide, an MSA pedal steel, an Ibanez 5-string bass, a Carvin bass, a mutt Jazz bass copy, an Epiphone Biscuit resonator, a Takamine resonator, a Strat, a Ric 12 string electric (from '67), several no-names and probably some more I'm not remembering. (The numbers don't add up because I have also acquired a few while I was at it.)
I'm left with the four basses (two are on the block), the LP, two acoustics, a Dobro and a '30s Regal spider-bridge reso. The bare minimum....

The extra plastic around the pickups was an add-on used to hide tooling blemishes. According to Tony Bacon, they were called "goof hiders" around the Gibson plant. They are flat plastic surrounds attached with little round-head brads, and are the same color as the actual pickup rings. Some have them, some don't. I guess they are another sign of Norlin's infamous carelessness.
I've never tried to pull them off to see what they are hiding. A good picture is on p 43 of "the Gibson Les Paul Book" by Tony Bacon and Paul Day.
The mini-humbuckers, by the way, are mounted differently from the full sized ones. You have to adjust the height before you attach the pickup rings to the face of the guitar. The larger pickups have screws that allow adjustment in situ.
When I replaced the original pickups, I found that the nuts on the end of what correspond to the adjustment screws on the big ones, were soldered to those screws. Once I finally got them apart and the new pieces in, I could understand why. It's a peculiar system and does not work very well, but I'm not prepared to say that's the reason Epiphone went under.
Anyhow, I've never seen them listed as parts anywhere, I guess you could mill some out of creme plastic. I just did a fast search of parts dealers and couldn't find any.
For what it's worth, this axe is an old road warrior. A few years ago a friend who plays bass put together a band at the hospital where he was working. You might call them yuppies who traded in their golf clubs for shiny new Fenders. Anyhow, he asked me to sit in with them on bass (he wanted to take advantage of one of the guitar player's absence to take over on lead) and he asked me to bring the Deluxe. When I arrived, he gathered the band around him and opened the case to show them what a "relic" electric guitar looked like!

Deluxe's rock. The one thing I miss about the piece of crap Les Paul Special I had was the minihumbuckers I put in it. What a unique sound!
