i'm going to start mixing my band's cd soon, am a mixing newbie, and need to buy some sort of monitoring system. anybody have any suggestions for powered monitors in the $200-300 range (i know that's cheap!)

i noticed the Fostex PS3.1s and the Samson DMS80s but wonder how good they are since they are cheap ($200). has anybody used these for reference monitoring? also, i've heard the Yorkville YSM-1s are good but i need powered monitors.

thanks for any info!

Whatever monitors you end up with - you DON'T want to mix until you've learned what your monitors REALLY sound like (and how to translate a mix on them). The way to do that, of course is simply LISTEN - - to as much well-recorded music that you can thru the monitors, making mental notes on their sonic characteristics.

I say get the Yorkville's and if you happen to have a regular home stereo reciver, use it. My $.02

You could also look at the EVENT 20/20's

But, you will something to power them.
