Thanks guys.

P.O. - I've gone full circle with these vocals. Started with one track down the center, switched to two takes panned 50/50 then one last try with 2 takes centered. All ok, but none quite right. I will continue to strive to provide juicy drums - 'cause that sounds cool.

Hey Fred - just listened to a couple of clips of cohen (I've heard of him of course as a songwriter, but never heard him sing) - one from the '70's and I thought, yeah I kind of do have a similar voice. Then I listened to him from the '80's and thought, God, I hope I don't sound like him. So, depending on the era you were thinking of, thanks!

I sometimes got an eerie Dead feeling with the vocals split across the stereo image.
Everything is in its place otherwise.
Nice one!

It's a good tune heatmiser, the solo has a cool Neil Young vibe to my ears!;)

Oops--I missed the new mix, it's sure got a bit more drive and more high end than the first mix and you definitely have a much better voice than Cohen by the way.

Thanks ray! - I definitely wasn't going for eerie here, although in another context eerie can be quite good...I'm trying to keep the two mixes separate for people, but it is difficult once a tune has been heard already and the alt. mix is buried in the thread...I think I've settled on one with the vocals centered. It's just a cover anyway - why do I keep revisiting this?

Love the song man, everything is actually in it's right place. Love the solo!

Thanks both of you! (Long time no read Anfontan - good to heard from you).

Just to be clear - this is not my song (would be cool if it was). It is a Jerry Garcia tune played live by the Grateful Dead from the early '70's on. I'm glad you like it though.

The solo is fashioned around the same idea that Jerry used, but much more clumsy on my part. I do like it too though. Thanks!

Does that mean Fred wasn't paying me a compliment :( :D ?

Ok, in an attempt to clarify (if anyone still has the stomach for it), here are the two mixes:

02.27.11 - with lead vocals panned 50/50:

SoundClick artist: kingseesar - oddball covers and originals

03.09.11 - with doubled vocals centered - one heavily compressed beneath the other:

SoundClick artist: kingseesar - oddball covers and originals

I think I'm gonna go with the 03.09.11 mix...

This sounds great HM, I don't really have anything to complain about. The mix sounds great to me, after only listening to the first mix i would agree with some of the people who say the vocals could come a bit, but i don't think it's a "must do". In some of my favorite songs the vocals blend in to the music and become an overall part of the appeal. I don't personally know the original so whether or not that's the way it was meant to be is neither here nor there. great job i enjoyed it.

Forgot to get back to this. I like the vocals centered a little better than when they're spread out.

Great. Thank you very much. I did this from memory without referring to the original, but Jerry has sort of a high tenor and I bring a more croaking sort of quality to this, so certainly not an accurate cover in that respect. Glad you liked it.

Thanks for checking back. I agree - a small improvement, but an improvement nonetheless!

Good cover man. Yea, I like the doubled vocal. It's so hard to pull off, but it's worth it when you get good results. Well done.
:)

Thank you! I'm not sure to what extent I pulled it off, but it could be worse...I'm learning...slowly.

Really great job on this. I don't have any nits...just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed listening.

Best,

Dave

Thanks much Dave! Glad you liked it. :)

Cool groove on this...music reminds me of The Band a little.....no nits here , just diggin'

Thank you queepy. I haven't listened to the The Band in a while, but I think they have a lot of great tunes. Sounding at all like them is fine by me.

It sounds album ready to me - radio ready -

Really? Wow. Thank you. I don't know about that, but it is certainly flattering and encouraging - thanks!
