Looping while recording MIDI

I have SL3 and am wondering how to record MIDI in a loop fashion such that as I record, the loop will playback, allowing me to trigger in real time, adding on new bits each cycle.

I do this on a LinnDrum, but whenever I record a loop in Cubase, it silences the track underneath and does not preserve it after one cycle.

Any ideas?

i set the left and right locators to mark the start and end points of the loop, make sure that record mode is set for normal, cycle record mode is set for mix (midi), click the cycle button on the transport, and click record.
