OK, I'm 98% certain this doesn't work, but I'm asking for some technical help to rule out my 2% uncertainty. This is one for real technogeeks to figure. If you plug a line level input into a passive DI box, let's say a whirlwind Imp II, and the low impedence output goes to an XLR mic input, can the phantom power from the pre be fed to the line level source? Related question- whether or not it works, will it fry the DI, or create hum, hiss, phase distortion or whatever? I'm still looking for the simple way to use a Shure SM82 with a variety of pres. It produces a *line level* signal, not mic level, but it requires phantom power. I can use it with a phantom power source, but the ones I have introduce an undesireable noise floor. I can use it with my Avalon, set for 50 ohms input impedence, but I often want to be using the 2 channels of the Avalon for other purposes than this one weird mic. So- what will happen if I feed phantom power to a passive DI?-Richie

I don't believe so because the input for the Imp II is unbalanced and you need a balanced line for phantom power.

Transformers don't pass DC, so I would guess it wouldn't work, the DI would block the phantom power.

Also do any of these boxes have a balanced XLR input?

Thanks guys, for confirming what I thought. I think I'm in the market for a better phantom power supply.-Richie
