Looks like the price of 3440s has gone up

This auction is another example of a seller with more hype and balls than facts and honest value.

One tiny picture.

A description that is misleading...he talks about other gear but doesn't clearly state what comes with the recorder and what doesn't.

An outrageous asking price.

And I also have to wonder about how he states that he was the original owner of the unit but already has 1500 transactions on ebay?

I guess offering a 100% money back guarantee is his biggest lure? That and the obnoxious text graphics?

What was PT Barnum's famous line?... ;)

Cheers! :)

Jeez. I just bought an a-3440 that had been given a complete tech check, belts replaced, etc. for $350 and thought that was a little steep. I doubt anyone's going to pay $1500 for that.

There's always an outlier. When I was selling my Teac 80-8, I saw one selling (or at least attemping to sell) for $1500. Some people are crazy is what it comes down to.

It's true. There's a sucker born every minute. Many home buyers in my area are upsidedown $100,000+ in their home loans because they bought in a hot and inflated market a year ago. Now the fanfare has cooled and their screwed.

The same is true for cars, only you're screwed the second you drive off the lot.

Luckily the sucker who buys that Tascam will only be out $1150.

I have to say that 80-8 in good working oder is well worthy of today's $1500. Actually 3440 has value of $1000 or so (imho, of course). People are crazy, because they don't see the value.... which is a good thing :D :p :D
And not some, but way way too many people are crazy because they would pull a grand out of pocket with a smile in exchange for an emply box ;)
..so, it depends

/respects

While the price is beyond high, Z makes a good point. I bet it will produce better recordings than any digital $1,500 recorder. It's worth whatever one person is willing to pay for it. Maybe the seller is just not in touch and has no idea what they sell for? His feed back is good. I don't see the scam factor and not sure what 1500 trasactions have to do with him being the original owner? I also didn't read anything misleading at all, maybe not quite clear, but misleading, I'm not getting that.

there's one of these on craigslist SF right now for 200......

If the unit is in mint condition, it may well produce a very fine sounding recording but getting into an analog vs. digital argument is not what this particular thread is all about or, has it degraded to that already?

It's worth whatever one person is willing to pay for it. Maybe the seller is just not in touch and has no idea what they sell for? His feed back is good.

It's possible that the seller is completely unaware with what that unit commands in other auctions but, I might also naively assume that someone with 1500 auctions under his belt knows the basics of researching to a modest level what should be a fair price for his unit which he claims to be in excellent condition but also admits to the unit being witness to hundreds of recording and he says nothing about what maintenance was ever performed or if the heads, guide posts and rubber has ever been serviced, re-lapped or reconditioned. He certainly doesn't let the perspective buyer see their condition with any photography of any substance.

I don't see the scam factor and not sure what 1500 transactions have to do with him being the original owner?

His sales pitch in the auction states that he sells all the things that most people dispose off in garage sales so why should one not believe him there but instead believe that he is the original owner and user of the deck? He doesn't speak like an owner/operator and doesn't clearly state what other, if any, accessories come with the unit. He eludes to having lots of tapes and a mixer and calls it all a "system" but doesn't actually state that those other pieces are or are not included. He also doesn't mention if he has the original box or manual and generally, most original owners do keep at least, their manuals.

I also didn't read anything misleading at all, maybe not quite clear, but misleading, I'm not getting that.

Fair enough.

Happy bidding.

Cheers! :)
