looking to get this one...

looking for a very nice PRE and COMPRESSOR

so this seemed nice....

if you have any other PRE + COMPRESSOR (or seperate) combinations........

then please suggest at the same price range....

(coming out of a Midiman Audiofile and coming into an AKG 3000c)

Thank You Guys!

that's not going to improve your quality by that much more. it's still a very hybrid design that probably runs an op amp in the output section .
you're better off with an RNP and RNC if you are on a really tight budget.
the TL compressor is something to avoid . it may do your signal more harm than good. save a few more hundred and get something with color that doesn't sound like the preamps you may already have.

I have to agree and at the same time disagree with Roger. I own a TL Audio 5050 preamp and compressor. It's not a proper tube unit as such like Roger says and i agree it wouldn't be a huge step up from most budget pres.

That said for what it is it's a fairly soild unit if you can get it for a good price and the compressor is perfectly useable. Infact if I had a criticism it's a bit boring but sometimes that's the type of compression you need. Especially on a channel strip where you're likely to be tracking with it and commiting the signal 'to tape'.

Don't get it confused with the higher end TL Audio stuff though, it's a prosumer piece no doubt.

I have the TL Audio 5001 which is four pre's in one unit, so I can't speak for the compressor. As for the pre's, they were a big step up from the budget stuff I had before (ART Tube MP, Yamaha mixer, etc.). Expect 'clarity' rather than 'warmth' in this tube-ish design.

Two tips that came my way was to use less gain and turn up the output knob so as not to hit the tubes too hard, and if you have an experimental side, try different tubes (depending on the tube, it can help a little).

I think they're a really good value, especially if you can get them used.
good luck.
