Looking for ways to quiet pc noise

The basic rule of quiet computing. Large fans moving slowly make less noise than small fans moving fast to move the same volume of air.

i have a pair of 120mm Scythe S-FLEX fans on my case, they turn at 800rpm, really slow but they still move enough air to keep things cool. it's like ninja silent.

also my motherboard and video card have fanless cooling. and my CPU has smart fan control, so it stays quiet most of the time spinning at lower RPM. and try getting a quiter power supply, which can usually be the noisest part of the computer due to the fast spinning fans.

Or keep your equipment away from the monitoring area.

I'm definitely of the opinion that this is the easiest, least expensive and best route. But then, I also have a really quiet room and no tolerance for CPU noise whatsoever. This method typically involves a monitor extension cable, a USB extension cable or two and maybe an interface extension cable and an extension power cord.

Cheers,

Otto

Humm i will have to get a pair of those. I have a monster Nvidia 7950 gx2 video card that i dare not remove the fan from. the stock intel duo core cpu fan seems to be fairly quiet.. so... I think your right about the power supply. I did some testing and it does seem to be the loudest item running in the case. Thanks for the info!!!

http://silentpcreview.com is another good place to check too. Somewhere on there they have reviewed 2 different products that are being sold to dampen and absorb computers sound. Check it out. That place helped me build a quieter pc.

On top of that I plan to build a case out of wood with an open front and back and with enough air space on the sides that it wont cause a problem and put some nicely wrapped 703 on the inside lining it.

In one of (supposedly) Dr.Dres studios (i got a pic of some studio anyway) they literally put a G5 inside an enclosure lined with auralex. So I plan on doing something similar.

But becareful for overheating. Definitely can be an issue when dealing with making this quieter. Such as fan controllers etc.

What I did in all seriousness (after trying so many other things) was to just buy a new case. It was a case by Antec called quiet something or other and it had built in sound dampeners. Way quieter then my last jet engine. Now if you lined that with one the aftermarket foam products being sold. I think it'd be quieter. Then building a case (remember air flow) with 703 surrounding the pc. I think you got a sure shot of one pretty quiet computer.

My idea of the day anyway.

Hope that helped some.

Yeah.. cooling is a real problem. I am running the dual core E6600 chip with 2 gig of kingston ram, and a monster bfg 7950 gx2.. i am managing to keep things cool, but that rear fan is noisy. I am look at swapping it with one of those sythe fans. I also bought some of that pc case dampening material that does help. The vibrations are not as bad as before. I think with a little more dampening material and that rear fan out of the way.. thinks will be more quiet for me.
