This is a clip of a song I've been writing/recording. I would appreciate some extra ears and tips so I can improve my recording/mixing skills.

You can listen to the clip here:
colinhill.fuzz.com/song/Shave-the-Baby-23382
(cut and paste, the boards won't let me post urls because I have less than 5 posts.)

Equipment used:
PodXT for Guitar/Bass
EZDrummer for drums
Cubase SX

I'm just a hobbyist, and definitely more of a musician than an engineer. My thoughts after listening to it a couple days after recording is that it is way too compressed, and the bass is way too loud.

Thanks

Wow - sounds pretty good to me! I'm listening on cheap headphones which attenuate the bass, but the mix sounds very clean.

I like the main riff -very melodic and dream like. I would like to see it progress or pick up some intensity during the piece, but you might already be planning that. Good job!

i suggest you go make some posts, then come back and post a real link. most of us here are lazy :)

There's a reason for that. You should probably respect it and contribute a little to the forum (not monetarily, but with some posts) instead of trying to get around it.

Is this post not a contribution? I'm not trying to get around anything. I was under the impression that this was the correct usage of this forum.

Thanks. I'm glad it sounds clean. I couldn't tell if the mix was way off or not as I didn't compare it with any professional mix and my ears are unexperienced. And thanks for the compliment of the music itself. Yeah most of my songs seem to start out mellow and pick up intensity, so I'm not sure if I want to do that with this. But it does seem like a natural progression.

It may be just the speakers I am listening on, but it seems like the bass may be up a bit too loud. Yes I do realize that bass line is a huge aprt of this tune and to the overall sound, but I think it could come down a tiny bit. Also, I think the kick needs to be a bit louder or deeper... if you can boost some of the low/low-mid eq that might help without actually raising the volume. Overall, I think it sounds great. I wouldn't worry about the compression... it never feels like it is ruining any aspect of the song.
