Looking for recording equipment

How much would I have to spend. To get a system that has 8 simultaneous recording tracks. All the machines I see in stores have 8 tracks. But can only record on 2 at the same time. I want to just be able to record my hole band at the same time. Could I do this on just the 2 tracks or do I need all 8 to get good sound quality. Any info would help a lot thax
 
This is a very broad question.

Do you want to record on a stand alone unit or to your pc? What is your budget? What equipment do you have now? What kind of music? Do you have a dedicated recording space?

Use that little 'search' button at the top of the page to do some serious research. Just ask if you don't understand something...please no 'best mic under $X' questions though!

Yes, you will need at least 8 inputs with preamps on them but also 8 mics, 8 cables, 8 stands and at least a stereo system to listen back on. Get dedicated standalone recorder or computer interface with 8 preamps and XLR inputs and be prepared to spend a lot of time learning to record by experience.

I would say it will run you at least 2 to 3 grand but you can always start with a recorder and a mic and work your way up from there.

There are multitrack recorders (which I believe you were talking about) like the yamaha aw16g or the newer version the aw1600.
Zoom also have a 16 track recorder that can record 8 tracks at a time (MRS-16???)
The Tascam 2488 I've been told has alot of fults but can record 8 at a time as well.

A basic set up would probably be.

Multitrack recorder
Monitors
Microphones
Stands
Cables

Thats about as basic as it gets.

I am looking for a stand alone system. And I no I have to bye mics and stands cables and all that. Is there an 8 track recorder that can. Simultaneously record on all 8 tracks at the sane time. In the neigborhood of 500 0r 600 bucks.
 
You could probably get an aw16g off ebay for around that I'm just guessing. And if you don't want that additinal 8 tracks just fill them up with "doo wop" tracks and It'll sound really cool :D
 
The Zoom 1608 is 16 tracks w/ 8 xlr/1/4" combi inputs (and simultaneous recording) for $800. Check it out!
I use the Zoom 802cd (only 2 inputs) and I LOVE it!
 
If you have a laptop, you can get a firepod for $600 which comes with Cubase LE, converters, and preamps. You'd still need another $100 for an external hard drive for more reliable operation though, and it can sort of be a pain to set your computer up for DAW use.

I don't know about stand aloans.
 
I have settled on a Fostex MR-8hd, 4 track Simultaneous recording. no cd rw drive but, it was the most complete packsge in my price range. And an audix mic so far its bad ass. Altough I have only owned it for an hour. Thanx for your help.
