A client of mine asked me about affordable ($300-700 or so) powered monitors. I don't really know what's available and good in that range.

anybody?

she also is interested in Mic Pre's in a similar price range.

any recommendations there?

thanks

I would suggest looking at the Event 20/20 bas monitors. They go over the price range a little, but definately worth it!

Micro

Oh, as for a mic-pre, I don't use one so don't want to suggest anything personally, but should be able to get a decent one in that range.

I'm loving my Fostex PM-1 active monitors (~$400.), but monitors are an intensely personal decision. I strongly suggest that the person who will be doing the mixing take some of their own mixes out to the stores and audition monitors themselves.

Regarding pre-amps -- FMR's RNC (about $475. through mercenary.com) is outstanding. Studio Projects VTB-1 ($180. at Sweetwater.com) is also quite good with a tube twist.

The RNC is NOT a preamp, it's a compressor....

They are in the final stages of producing the RNMP though (the Really Nice Mic Pre)...

Sorry, don't mean to jump in and change the subject (since it's a compressor and not a pre) but is the RNC really up to $475 now?!?!?

Yo Jonothan:

Mic Pre? A great one is the Grace Design 101 -- about 599 or so.

Better one? Investigate the Martinsound mic pres.

Both can be viewed on the net.

Green Hornet:D :D :p :p

Are the M Audio SP 5B Studiophile Powered Monitors any good? For amplified speakers, the price seems pretty good (right around $300).

Yamaha MSP5....in your price range (Ithink), and very good value for money..

Oh man, I put my foot in my typing.

FMR's RNC is a great compressor. It's still $175. at Mercenary.com.

FMR's RNP is a new preamp from the same folks. $475 over at Mercenary. Harvey Gerst, who I respect hugely, thinks very well of this preamp -- hunt around for his online review. It has been compared as being in the same league as some much more expensive preamps, and is a good one to consider, especially considering Mercenary's pretty darn liberal return policy.

(muttering to myself....rn*P* not rn*C*....)

Sorry for the confusion,

Yes, the Studiophile SP-5Bs are good monitors. I actually like them better than the Event 20/20s.

The SP-8Bs are even better though.
