Hey everyone. I just wanted to get some input from all of you regarding my home setup. I currently have a setup centered around the MOTU 828MKII unit. I am now looking to get a better mic pre. Here are the ones I am considering:
Safe Sound P1
PreSonus Eureka
Drawmer MX60
Drawmer Tube Station 1
Summit Audio 2BA-221
Universal Audio M-610 (Worth the $4-500 increase in price over the others mentioned here?)
A Designs MP-1 (same question as w/the UA unit)
Great River ME-1NV (same question as w/the UA unit)
Grace Design Model 101
Speck Mic Pre 5.0
Apogee Mini MP
Sytek MPX-4II
FMR Audio RNP
Focusrite Voicemaster Pro
I realize that it's a long list but I wanted to know what pre you all thought was worth investing money into. Keep in mind that I would prefer to get a two channel pre but will settle for a unit with only one if the sound it offers is much better.
I will be using the pre for everything from voice overs to signing so I need flexibility. I obviously want the pre to be noticibly better than those found in my 828. Good metering and dynamics processing are just icing on the cake as they can both be done in software. CHEAPER=BETTER... Consider the quality gainted vs. price. I don't have unrealistic expectations for what a good pre will do for my recordings. Price is an important factor. When responding please give options instead of one suggestion (I expect the more expensive pre's to be better... the question is whether or not the marginal gain in quality is worth the price.) Maybe just give your suggestion in the two price ranges (~$500 and ~$1000)
Another option for me is to simply sell my 828 and replace it with a Metric Halo Mobile I/O ULN2 or Apogee Mini ME. Both have shortcomings but if the pre's built into them are good enough I would consider going down this route instead.
BTW I love the SM57 and hope to get the most out of mine after the upgrade.
Thanks!
