Looking for guitar mutli fx - NOT amp modelers

I was looking at the Boss ME-50, the TC G Major. I want something with traditional fx (delay, mods, octaver) but some really whacked, fucked sounds too.

I play a Les Paul thru a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb.

Any suggestions? Budget is aroung $500.

I like both the Boss GT-6 and the Digitech GNX series. Both have amp modeling but as stated above you can turn it off. I think both retail for about $400. If you want to go with rack mount, I have always liked the Alesis Midi Verb 4. That is a little cheaper too. Check out Lexicon, they make some nice stuff as well.
 
The ME-50 is nice but probably not gonna stand up to that T.C. unit. The ME-50 is nice if you like to stomp and filddle knobs (it is supposed to resemble a series of stomp boxes.

Just chimin' in to say the ME-50 is a nice box (metal too).

You could score a used Digitech 2101 on ebay for around 200-300 dollars, I think...
Although it's a preamp, it can be used as a fx-only device, and it's a great one at that. I know I love mine... :-)
It's an extremely versatile machine, and the effects in there are great (except for the wah, which sucks big time)

Check it out, and let us know what you end up with...

i have an fx2000 i picked up a few years back that does all this and more. the gnx, whatever digitech's newest multi fx unit is will have enough sounds to keep you busy and your cat scared for a long time.
 
I've got a boss ME33. This works really great for me. And I think you can get used ones for real goor prices.
 
I would vote against the Alesis MidiVerb 4. I had one for a couple years that I used in my guitar rig. It's noisy and sucks your tone. The reverbs and flange sounded nice but I wasn't crazy about the delays and chorus.

I'm currently using a Rocktron Intellifex LTD that I scored on EBay used for $150. I like the effects much better than the Alesis but it's also a little noisy in the effects loop on my Budda. It's like adding tape hiss to my tone. I know that probably all effects units do this to some extent and I doubt it's even noticeable at gig volume levels. But I hear it and it bothers me at low levels.

I think a high-end processor is going to be my next big gear purchase. Does anyone know what the differences are between the TC Electronics G Major and G Force?

I third the Boss GT-6, although I'd recommend quality over quantity.


If this is for recording, the GT-6 will be great. For live, I'd reoommend Electro Harmonix pedals (expensive, but amazing).

Crazy! I bought a G-Major not long after my post in this thread. I've been using it ever since. I love it! Not every effect in the G-Major is killer... for instance I haven't been able to get a phaser sound I really like. But other than that I really don't have any complaints... it's a great sounding unit that is very tweakable and easy to program.
 
TC's are the best sounding and most quiet, and least amount of tone suck from your tube amp. i own one.

the only downfall about it is there is no phantom power for your midi pedal. you need a aftermarket pedal board and one that uses a power supply on its own. the g-force i believe has the 5th pin so all you need to do is plug in you pedal to the g-force and boom, it works.

some one mentioned the boss me-50. it is a great sounding pedal that would be best in font of your amp if you use the distortions. I found all the distortion work great with my tube amps. i spend about 3 hours one day checking through it at guitar center one day. It is a fantastic pedal in every way but ONE. That ONE thing kept me from buying it.

there is way too much of a delay in between switching patches. you know your jamming out and the solo is coming up so you want to give the solo a little more sizzle, and maybe some delay that you have pre programmed in another patch. when you step on the footswitch there is a moment of silence like someone turned off your guitar for a split second before the new patch comes in. It was really anoying and i spent like 2 hours on it before i noticed. very disapointing.

its insane !!!!

why would two well respected companies make such great products and forget one simple thing such as a delay in patch switching and TC not making a decent midi board to go with their awsome processor ???

I owe the me-33 which has some nice distortion models (I even made a site for patches for that thing called the ME-33 Patch Central, though it is offline for several months now) I bet you can get them real cheap now. And just like Metal said the me-33 too has this delay when switching patches, quite annoying.

I got the TC G Major - had it for a year and sold it. I think I'm just more of a stomp box guy. Now all I use is a wah and a Boss delay. Go figure.
 
any boss/roland setup will kick some ass.Got an ME50 and it rocks.
 
MOST digital pedals have that delay. BUT the ME-50 has a great trick included that at least some of the others don't have - if you change complete saved combi patches then yes, there's a delay (shorter than many other company's delays though). BUT if you just use it like it was originally intended to be used, which is to emulate a distortion pedal, modulation pedal, delay pedal and variable (eg: wah) pedal of your preselected choice, then you can turn each pedal on and off in real time without any delays. Used like that, to truly replace stomp boxes in a simple configuration, it has no delays and sounds great.

Also, the fx engine in the me-50 is the same as the gt-6 and gt-8 or whatever they're called by boss. Just that it has no amp/speaker emulations and is intended for a completely different audience - the me-50 is for people who prefer to easily turn knobs and hear realtime feedback to find their tone, not for people who want complex saved programs. It CAN work that way, but it's not why it was designed in the way it was. Why do you think it's more expensive than many other boss units? because a lot of money went into making a digital pedal work EXACTLY like classic analog stomp boxes, and no other fx box does it as well (not even that fancy VOX board you can buy, although you do get great vox amp emulation with that one which is the best part about that board IMHO).

me-50 is a different audience, players who want to play but don't want to know if the delay they just dialed in and think sounds good is 232ms or 242ms. You just dial it in, save it and it's there when you need it.
 
I just picked up a Magicstomp II at MF. They're blowing them out right now for $79(usually $199). There's a couple of amp models in there that sound pretty good but I bought it solely for the individual effects which are excellent.

My Guitar -> Boss TU-2 Tuner -> Ibanez TS-9 -> ProCo DeuceTone RAT -> Boss DD3 Delay -> Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb (sweet tremolo :) )

I tried two phasers the other day - a Small Stone, and an MXR. Both were superb. The Small Stone really sucks gain and I didn't like it at first. It can do a bunch of stuff that the MXR just couldn't though - including vast depth! The Phase 90 is great in its own way. It doesn't have the flexability or 'specialness' of the Small Stone, but it does have a classic phase sound, and doesn't suck up as much gain as the Small Stone.

I want one of them - but don't have enough room for both - damn!

I don't really have time for multi-fx, I've tried a few in my time, but good pedals just sound better to me :D
